Cleaning porous decorations

Anybody have any special advice on how to clean porous stuff? My concern is that it'll be hard to get cleaning chemicals out of the porous stuff after I've washed everything.

Specifically, I'm talking about pieces of malaysian driftwood and lace rock that I use to create natural looking hides.

Soaking it would be a start or high pressure water jet.

I soak my wood decor in water and bleach, then rinse it a few times and viola! Good to go. :)

Thanks! I was reading a similar thread where somebody talked about coating porous stuff with some kind of spray varnish like stuff.

This seem like a good idea to you guys? If so, anybody recommend a product?

Any non toxic spray on clear coat should do the job as long as you use it properly. Which means completely cleaning and drying the item, spraying a coat on, letting it completely dry, and repeating for a couple layers of protection. As long as it'sa clean, smooth, and vapor free layer it should do well for you.

This x2. Make sure you give it at least a few days to fully dry and air out.

Thanks again! Can you guys maybe recommend a specific brand or product? I just know that the people at my local hardware store will have no idea what's ultimately toxic or not. And I'm the opposite of an expert myself.

You really just have to have a store associate take you to those products and start reading labels. You could ask what brand sells the most.
