Question about Lesser quality

Ok, so as some of you may remember from my first post here on bp.net, I'm looking to get a female Lesser next month. My question: Are "1st generation Lesser's" higher quality lesser's? (1st generation being direct from a platty daddy) Or is it all based upon genes and luck of the draw? I ask because I really would love to have a lighter lesser, one that really pops as an adult, and I'm not really sure how to tell those from the darker ones as hatchlings. Also I have seen that line used in an ad on fauna (1st generation lesser) like it was something super special. (or maybe that breeder was just making a note of it, I don't know..) Anyways, my bp pro's...what is your opinion?

Also, anyone else going to the Daytona Breeder's Expo?

"High quality" in the ball python hobby means that the morph must be an excellent example of that morph. If you get a pastel that people can confuse with a normal, then you got yourself a low quality pastel. If you get a pastel that is so yellow, that someone says "WOW that's a pretty snake!", then you can go ahead and pat yourself on the back for having a quality pastel :gj:.

Lessers are a different story. There isn't a general "standard" at all in ball pythons. Buy what you like. You like really light lessers? Look for a really bright lesser! Remember though, lessers/butters are a color AND pattern mutation :gj:. Look for something that is cool all around to YOU.

My suggestion is to continue looking at pictures of everybody's lessers. You can start a post in the BP Pictures section of the forum asking people to show you their lessers/butters :gj:! That should give you a nice long list of pictures of lessers that people think are high quality to THEM. Go for the traits you like the most. - you won't be disappointed.

Well, 'quality' is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. But their appearance has everything to do with genetics and jack squat to do with number of generations removed from the original lesser. You can take the same lesser and breed it to multiple females and some of the babies will look stunning, some of them will look pretty good, some will look average and some will be 'not all that'. Remember that the female will bring in 50% of the genes to the equation and her looks are just as important as the looks of the male.

Thanks h00blah :) I guess I'm just chomping at the bit for my baby. I'm ready to go get her like right now... Just want to make sure I'm armed with the best info I can be before I get there. Basically, stop thinking so much and go with what makes me say "ooooh, pretty!" hehe. I can't remember the poster's name..but he had a thread a few days ago titles "Less of what?" and his Lesser was jaw dropping. I guess I'm worried because I don't have any good hatchling pics to go from. But, I do know I love the lighter, brighter, and the less busy patterned Lesser's thus far. I might go mad before the expo gets here...:rolleye2:

Edit: Thanks Mark! I thought that was the case (that generation didn't mean diddly) but I wanted to be sure. I would however, love to get my paws on a male daddy gene one day and make some platty's of my own... Ohhh the dreams I can dream ;)

For a lesser, I like ones with no spots, reduced kinds of patterns (not 'busy' looking), and a nice light golden or silver color.

That's just my opinion, but I don't think I stand alone...

BECAUSE the female will bring 50% of the genes, you would do good if you got a male (if you plan to breed) that has similar qualities. You like the bright color. Get a male that also has exceptionally bright color. Same goes with the reduced pattern. You want to really bring out the traits you admire the most in your babies :gj:.

I prefer a darker more contrasty lesser with a busier pattern. I plan on making lesser cinnis so i think the lesser girl i got will pair up nicely with the cinnamon gene:

I can also appreciate lighter creamery or more reduced pattern ones. For my breeding plans though i thought this would mesh in the best!

I'm hoping to do some lighter pattern breeding (years down the line) as I tend to like the bright morphs or high contrast. But really, who knows. I love the way the Lesser lightens some of the pattern morphs, like the Lesser Enchi and Queen Bee's (I know the queen is actually like a 4 gene, soo gorgeous though!) I'm not a huge Cinni fan personally, until you mix super cinni and pied (Panda pied! omg *cuddle*):D

Our lesser girl, finally to breeding size.. will be a little bigger by the time her boyfriends are ready.. can't decide between the enchi or the calico to pair her with first :) Definitely prefer the extreme reduced patterns, and in general are one of my favorite morphs, even with all the combos out there.
