python ban

When the ban takes effect, will it be illegal to own the snakes on the list, or just to sell and import them? I'm a little confused on that aspect...

import them or cross state lines with them. You can still own them.

You can own, breed, and sell these snakes. You cannot transport them across State lines in any way (no shipping, driving, or even walking them across).
You cannot import them from another country, or from another State.

Once this goes into effect, the Burms, Afrocks, and yellow anacondas that are in your State at the time (and their offspring) will legally be the only ones there, forever.

I would hope that folks with an interest in the species are taking steps to assure that their State's gene pools are sufficient to keep the species healthy there. It's also a good time to make sure that favorite morphs are all present in the State.

Some States will wind up with a surplus, while others may find themselves with too few for everyone who wants one.

I wonder how many breeders will continue to breed them. It sounded like BHB has decided to stop breeding them all together and will just keep their remaining burms as pets. :(

If breeders do continue to breed them, then do you think after a few generations (or maybe a lot) we're going to see distinctly different varieties? The Oregon Yellow Anaconda could have different characteristics to the California Yellow Anaconda.

I guess it would depend on the size of the state and how many people are breeding these snakes in a particular state. You would think a few people breeding a few female burms a year at 40+ eggs per would over saturate that state pretty quickly.

What if you went to the state line, set it one on the ground, waited for it to go over the line and then went across and picked it up?

The local herp store hasn't sold a snake in weeks...he's been busy taking in all the ones that people are freaking out over becoming "felons" for owning them.

Some people have apparently even considered killing their snakes to avoid prosecution because they're so terrified of being 'arrested".

[we're talking corns and balls here, too]

So much for "promoting small business" and "job creation".

This government sucks.

Anyone remember history class and prohibition? Im sure there will still be a market. And keep in mind they wont ban ownership cause there are too many animals in existance and if they banned ownership theres the big threat of people releasing them.
