Did my good deed for the day.
So I was in my local big chain pet stores today to return the heatpad I got as a temp fix until I got my Flexwatt. I went to look at the BPs and none was in the enclosure until I saw this girl with it walking around. This thing was tiny and just the cutest thing. I heard her dad talking to her about having a boa and a retic some time ago so I figured he knew something about them. Then the more I listened (eaves dropping really) the more I heard that I didn't like. He was telling his daughter to a get a huge bowl for him to swim in and the he has a heat rock at home she can use. That's all I needed to hear and I jumped in for the chance to spread what little knowledge I have. I talked about a tub, a UTH with a thermastat, hygrometer, hides, ambient and cool/warm side temps, and whatever else I could think of until my family was getting impatient with me. Afterwards I told my wife that if I can at least spread a little knowledge I would feel better and the BP would have a fighting chance. She said she understood and was willing to help me make some small information cards that I could hand out to people.

Good for you that you did this! When I ordered a BP.net t-shirt, Judy (JLC - admin) was kind enough to send a handful of BP.net pamphlets. These things are great - I've already handed a few of them out! They give plenty of care info (hides, temps, feeding tips, etc) plus letting new owners know of this online resource for additional help. Maybe you can get some of these pamphlets, too.

I'd love to get some of those pamplet/care-sheets too. Good on you to take the time to talk to a new owner. A positive experiance with her first snake might turn her into a enthusiast. We need more of those.

That would be awesome because I always refer people to this site...how do I go about getting some?

I wasn't a jerk about it either, I just showed interest in the snake first, let them know I have three and when they were looking at tanks, I started talking about husbandry.

Matter of fact I was wearing this shirt I got from ExoticReptiles.org

Thats terrific! We really need to be educated before we purchase our pets, and the pet store does a terrible job of it. I wish someone knowledgeable had talked to me before I got Jackson. I love him to pieces, but I really could have had him set up better beforehand if i had known a little more. Then he wouldn't have had to be uncomfortable while I was learning. :D
