James the Stimson's Python

I went to Skiploder's house this evening (last night - whatever) to get a rack, and as usual I came home with a snake! :oops: You may have seen photos of him before, but here's James the Stimson's Python... I'm still learning about this unique species, so hopefully Skiploder can jump in to answer any questions. All I know is that he's a cutie pie! :D

A great snake. I've often wondered why this snake isn't more popular in the pet trade.

I've wondered the same. The antaresia pythons are bulletproof in terms of forgiveness of husbandry mistakes, are easy to handle and are more interactive than your average boid. They also stay a manageable size and subsequently don't take up a great deal of space.

In this day and age. I guess the lack of color morphs has hurt them. Corn snakes and ball pythons come in innumerable colors and patterns. Stimson's have a wide variability in color and pattern but it tends to be a variance of the same degree - no where near what you can get in a ball or a corn or even in a gopher snake.

Laura - that second pic is great. It's obvious after six years of staring at my mug he's intent on checking out a new face.

I think that's a big part of it, since people do love the fancy colors/morphs - myself included! One of the reasons I'm breeding my BPs and corns is to see what cool colors & patterns will come out, which I guess you can't do with the Stimson's. I love him anyway, and he'll make a great non-breeding pet. :)

My roommate called it a "dinosaur face," and we both think it's precious. ;)

Btw Craig, I am having some trouble getting the rack warm enough. It's hooked to my herpstat with the melamine rack, which is reading at 95 right on the tape, and close to 90 on the inside hot spot... but the Boaphile is reading over 5 degrees cooler, and ambient temps are under 80. Could it have to do with being closer to the window, or what?? :confused: The other rack I got from you is also reading too cool, so I'm not really sure what's going on! Might be time to re-arrange everything, and possibly hook the other racks together (with the herpstat) - then the melamine will be separately heated, since it obviously holds the temps higher for whatever reason.

Maybe the wattage on the flexwatt is not the same between the melamine rack and the Boaphile............the hot spot should not differ due to the proximity to the window.....the ambient would.

I used to have to get the back heat rack to 90 degrees at the back of the tub by setting the Herpstat to 96 degrees. You may want to buy a piece of Reflectix and sandwich it between the back of the rack and the wall. This should help reflect heat back into the tub.

The probe for the back heat Boaphile should be on the Velcro strip I left on the inside of the back wall so it will wedge between the back of the tub and the heat.

On the ballroom rack, the probe should be on the flexwatt underneath the tub. Remember, the heat tape is recessed in a grove on the bottom shelves. On the Herpstat, a setting of 96 degrees netted me 91 or 92 degrees on the hotspot.

Until you can get another t-stat, try using a dimmer. Why don't you give me ring tomorrow if things aren't working out.
