Sex and Pricing

I'm curious as to why females are more expensive than males? Is this price difference artificial, or is there actually a reason for females to be more expensive? Doesn't it make more sense for it to be the other way around, since a male morph could breed to several females, but a female can only breed to one male (double sired clutches excluded).

Thanks for any insight anyone can give me, so far I'm at a loss to explain it.

You are right, when it comes to the newer morphs, Males are more expensive, because of what you described before. An expensive Male can be breed to several normal (cheap) females.

When you look at the older morphs, the females are more expensive. Pastel, Spiders, Fires to name a few. Because they take time to grow and be able to breed. So people try to stock up on them.

Supply and Demand as always.

I think at least partly it has to do with time to maturity.

See, a male can be ready to breed in 8 months or less. A female needs a minimum of 2-3 years of excellent care to reach breeding size and condition.

Hence, much more food, much more bedding, much more supplies are needed to care for a female to breeding size, and thus the higher price. At least, that's is at least one thing that make sense to me.

That's exactly it. You only need one male to sire several clutches. You still need an individual female for every clutch though. That means most people are going to keep the females they produce, and sell the males, which leads to an abundance of males on the market.

Completely true.

A male can mate in a matter of months. A female however should be of a more specific larger size 1200g or better is what I go by. That's for an adult female though.

I have seen prices go both ways for babies however. But for babies Im not sure why females are sometimes so much more, it takes so long to get them to breeding size. It has to do with where you purchase from as well. I find sometimes in my area that the price is by morph and not by sex.

It's the same thing again. Everyone wants to keep the females they produce, so the price that they're willing to let it go out of their collection is that much higher. Supply and demand. :D

I would think the males would cost more. Just buy males and breed to normal females and keep the female visual morphs

Which in turn means that you're adding MORE males to the market. When there's a bunch of males available, and few females, the females will cost more.

Can we rethink our titles on these threads?
