Question for compound bow hunters
Ok i am getting back into archery hunting and will be needing a deer target for practice.What i have found is several types of life size deer targets.What do you use? I will only be using the field heads for practice.I will be hunting from a ground blind also.

I used to bow hunt some and worked at an archery shop for a couple of years. It depends on your budget as to what kind you want to get.
A plain bag target is good for field tips, but no broadheads. It's also pretty inexpensive.
The compressed foam targets (the cube type) are a little more expensive and durable. You can also shoot broadheads into it. This is the one i would go with.
The deer targets are expensive and not really necessary in my opinion.
I know you said you didn't plan on practicing with broadheads, but I always sacrificed a couple for practice just to be sure they'll fly the same as the field tips do.

For compound, a deer target isnt really needed. A bag target will do just fine. But no broadheads, they'll shred it. Just make sure the field tips you use are the same grain as the broadheads you plan on using.
Targets in general for compound aren't great unless you've got alot of room simply because you're going to be shooting at 30+ yards, and most peoples yards aren't terribly long. I feel, for compound users, going to a range or a moble target is best (so you can take it out to the boonies somewhere and practice).
I'ma traditional bowmen myself, so my backyard is fine for my shooting, since I wont be taking a shot at over 20yards.
Out of curiousity, whats you're poundage?

Well the reason i was wanting to use the actual deer target is for the exact shot placement.When i had archery eq before i used the bag target and after awhile became pretty precise with my arrow placement.To give you an idea i hit a arrow in the exact middle then split that arrow with the next shot :O.I was at 30yrds.As far as area to practice i will have a huge farm area with nothing around but dirt and woods for miles :P.I have to start over with new archery eq so i have no idea on what the poundage will be.What bow do you shoot?

I agree completely the block or cube is an awesome target it has 5 small targets to aim at and you can use broadheads. If you know where the kill zone on a deer is you don't really have to have a deer shaped target they do make them with replaceable vital areas if you are set on having a deer shaped target I would go with one that has replaceable vitals. But the block works great and is much cheaper. You will need to practice some with broadheads as the shoot different sometimes than the field points and having multiple targets on the one block will save you some arrows because a tight group with broadheads will shred all the arrows.

If you've got a the space, you could spring for a deer target, but still no broadheads.
And I use a take-down recurve. I've got the light limbs on now, but its good enough for deer. I pull 41lbs out of it. My heavy limbs are about 50lbs.

LOL! Now this is funny you mention mathews bows.I went to a place today and found out my draw is 27 and the guy tried selling me on mathew bows lol.See i had the PSE deer hunter and was satisfied with it.Thanks for the reply :gj:
