    Red Light vs Blue Light

Been asking a lot of questions lately sorry but just want to be sure on everything and regarding this topic I found a lot of conflicting opinions online.
Maybe the members of here will have more knowledge and experience.

In regards to the night cycle, few questions:

    1) I always thought the red light was for us to be able to see them and not disturb the snake. That they couldn't see the light. But now I'm reading that they can see the light? Which is correct?

    2) I need to replace my old red light, was thinking maybe going for the blue light, see how that looks in the terrarium. Does that have the same properties as the Red, or any advantages/disadvantages?

Can I go with either one or should I not use one at all. Was also using it to make sure the temp didn't drop too much, they produce a little heat.

Side note, anyone ever use both red and blue together lol, any pictures? Or any pictures in general of your night lights, I think they look really cool.

    Thanks

Re: Red Light vs Blue Light

I have no personal experience with the red lights so I can’t say for sure on whether or not the snakes react to them but I did used to use the blue night lights when I had tanks. I really liked the blue lights because they looked kind of like moonlight and the snakes didn’t seem to notice them at all.

I have a pic somewhere of the light but I’ll have to find it. I’ll post it here if I do.

I've always liked the dark purple lights best. They give off enough light that I can see inside the enclosure, but not enough that it lights the room at all.

Re: Red Light vs Blue Light

I know my Burm can see the color red real well. If I shoot the temp in his cage, he will lock in on the red dot from the laser. The laser is about shot and is pretty dim and Loki thinks hum possible food?

Yeah I read a lot of people claim their snakes can see the red. Might try the blue and see how it goes, if I see a difference in behavior.

Ball pythons can see pretty much any light including red and blue. This is why most keepers either use a ceramic heat emitter or radiant heat panel for always on heating.

It is important to provide a ball Python with an adequate day/night cycle so either all them access to outside light but not directly or put a light in on a timer. Keeping a ball Python in perpetual darkness or light will harm their rhythms and mess them up. Providing an adequate light cycle improves their welfare tremendously.

Re: Red Light vs Blue Light

I've actually looked up studies on what light waves BPs can see, and it seems to be right around green and blue, plus ultraviolet and their IR heat sense (very far from red). I would recommend a CHE (ceramic heat emitter) or a RHP (radiant heat panel) instead of heat lamps because neither of these give off light so you can use it 24 hours without disturbing them at night. I use a regular red light bulb to look at Naga in the evenings, and it doesn't seem to bother him, but I don't leave it on over night since I only use it to see him. I use natural light from the window for his day/night light cycle.

I’ve been running a red heat light on thunder since I had him. I got it all set up really before I was emersed here and heard the conflicting studies.

That being said he doesn’t seem to mind or notice. It goes on and off here and there and I’ve seen him out when it was off and pop on and he didn’t flinch. He’s still active at night and hides all day so I really don’t know.

Ill be moving him to a pvc cage soon w a RHP and just using the natural light because I have 2 big windows on opposite ends in the room he will be in. I guess I’ll see them what it’s like or if he acts different.

What device or how do you guys look in on them at night I’d say you have a pvc tank and it’s dark at night but want to watch them ?

Re: Red Light vs Blue Light

here's a pic: i installed (using a glue gun) an LED RGB light strip in my rack and this is the color i use most. it looks like moonlight. the pic makes it look really bright but it's on the lowest dimmer setting and fairly dim.

i plan on getting another one of these for my T8.

you've gotten great advice so i'll summarize my opinion: for light, you can use anything you want but it should be for light only. for heat, get a CHE that produces only heat.

Yeah really good advice from everyone, I like your set up, looks really good! I just ordered a CHE bulb I'll have running 24/7, it'll run along side my daytime light during the day to maintain temp and then at night it won't let the temp drop too much. Also ordered some LED strips like the ones you used for your unit, we'll see how they turn out, they come with a remote that I can change the colors with, we'll see if they are any good. If they are I'll share the link.
