RB Heat Pads
So, on the Reptile Basics website it says that their heat pads can be used without thermostats? I was just wondering what this was about

These pads can often be used WITHOUT a thermostat due to their low wattage density.
The key here is it says can often be used. That doesn't mean it should be used without a thermostat.

I have no idea what they keep advertising it that way. Their heatpads despite what they claim can reach 100F if left alone so yeeeaaah I wouldn't trust it or any heat source without a thermostat lol

Because the manufacturer advertises that like that but if you look on their FAQ page you will see
12. The consumer MUST use an appropriate thermostat or rheostat with ALL heat tape and heated cage/rack products. The consumer is also responsible for the installation and maintenance of these products. We can not stress the need for this enough. Your safety and the safety of your animals depends on it.

If you are seeing temps above 100 degrees you may need to consider a thermostat or rheostat. Generally this will only occur when the pad is used in a vivarium with other heat sources or in a warm room temperature.

I've had mine run upwards of 105F so yeah, they do need a thermostat.
The fact that they have those disclaimers somewhere besides the product listing says a lot, though. Not everyone's going to go hunting and just assume that the package speaks the truth.

Re: RB Heat Pads
Also, since this is a heating thread I thought I'd ask. Can you use a thermostat(Jumpstart) with a heat lamp? Mines on a lamp dimmer right now but its pretty variable which temps I get

the general rule of thumb is that you want the UTH covering 1/3 of the bottom of the enclosure. you'll probably need a UTH that's around maybe 11 inches long and wide enough to just about cover width of the tub. does this help you?
