    Recommend UTH & Thermostat

    Hello BP Forum....

Well I took the 1st step of purchasing an enclosure for my soon to be 1st BP. I bought a 20L PVC setup at the local repticon. Seemed like a good choice over a glass enclosure and I didn't want to do a tub. It has a glass bottom for a UTH. Any recommendations on a UTH and Thermostat setup. Both the PVC enclosure maker and BP breeder said a UTH would do the trick.

    Thanks in advance!

Flexwatt imo. You can also order Flukers UTH which is basically flexwatt also. Also there is Ultratherm which is good and along the same lines. I like Zoo Med products for the most part but i would skip their UTH as its sticky and basically a heating wire element sandwiched between cushiony plastic.

For T-stat, I'm pretty biased as I've only used Herpstats and they have all worked great. Had multiple Herpstat 1, 2 and 6 and they all worked awesome. They arent cheap but they have lots of safeties and considering a t-stat is one of the most important items, it's well worth spending more on a quality unit. There is also Vivarium Electronics which are cheaper but dont have as many safeties and bells and whistles as a herpstat i dont think.

yes, I've been looking at the Herpstats and they do look to be expensive but I want to make sure I have the proper enviroment for my new BP. Seems like a lot of models on their page. I'll reach out to the manufacture to see if they recommend a certain model for my setup.

is flexwatt a UTH or is it some type of heater that lines the back of the cage? sorry newbie questions here...

    appreciate the feedback!

Flexwatt is a UTH that doesnt have sticky stuff on it. You attach it with aluminum foil tape on the corners. Much easier to work with as you can peel the tape off, throw it away and reattach the UTH to anything else.

As for which Herpstat, my vote goes to at minimum a Herpstat 1 . Not the Herpstat 1 basic. If you plan on maybe getting more snakes later, i would say pay the extra and get a Herpstat 2. Gives you more flexibility later on if you decide on another snake or need to add a RHP for winter time.

    Re: Recommend UTH & Thermostat

Reptile Basics sells THG heat tape which is very similar to flexwatt. It's sold by the foot (comes in huge rolls) By itself, neither the flexwatt nor THG comes with electrical connection. You can buy the plug from reptile Basics and they'll send it connected for like an extra $2. You would use aluminum tape to adhere it to the bottom of your enclosure - just make sure your thermostat probe is between the heat tape and the bottom of the enclosure.

As for thermostat, yes, contact spyderrobotics and ask him what he recommends. As far as I know, he only does email.
