    my baby

hey all, new to the forum. Just wanted to show you some pics of my new baby...

Ive had some concerns as of day 1 she would not go inside her hide, heck I swapped it out. And since going from the hide in pic 1, she has not even poked her hide in the second hide I have. The hide I switched too was the half log. I did get a second log that I stacked on the first one as shes active and likes to climb on the branches a lot. She also loves to sleep under the log a lot. She does hiss often, and tends to be sleeping constantly till late night. If shes active, she doesnt mind being picked, but when shes balled up sleeping....its constant hissing. I read on here tonight to black out the sides and back. I will do that. I do have my heat sources plugged into a thermostat that regulates heat. I tend to have it anywhere from 78-82 at night. During the day it tends to be 88-90. I live in So Cal, not far from the beach (1.5 miles from beach). I dont have a humidity meter, but comfortably I will say my terrarium tends to be on the dryer side (30-50%). To solve this I put a black towel over head in the middle. I am debating to get a snake hook to pick her up as I know young ones can be a lil anxious with holding. Also with the 2 branches I have and her constantly under both of them, it can be a pain to grab her without removing the branches. Below is the current set up.

I know next pic is blurry but not really worth retaking the pic lol...just a pic of the thermostat I am using

Congrats on your new snake - very nice looking bp. You may want to cover the back and sides of that tank to give your snake more privacy or eating issues may arise.

Best of luck to you with your new snake.

    welcome!

just some tips based on what i'm seeing and reading:
go to walmart and get a digital temp/humidity gauge.
tape tinfoil over the mesh top (no tape inside), cutting out a hole for the lamp, to trap humidity. another tip i use to boost humidity is to wet a hand towel, ring it out so it's not dripping, and lay it over one of the hides. this should boost humidity for about a week before you need to rewet the towel. also, get some sphagnum moss: that stuff is great for humidity.
get some fake leaves and vines to clutter the tank a bit. the enclosure looks very open, which makes the snake feel vulnerable, which may be why you're getting hissed at. side note: don't back off when you get a hiss, and try to pick them up anyway. 99% of the time it's a bluff, and the snake needs to learn they won't get their way by hissing.
i'm only seeing one hide, and it's open on both ends. you should consider getting two cave-like hides with only one opening.
no need to drop temps at night. keep it consistant.

ALL this being said, the fact you have a thermostat shows you've actually done your research! your on your way to many happy years with your new legless child.

    Re: my baby

Thanks for all the advice. I do have an cheap thermal blanket I can cut up. Might look better than fun foil. Going to get another hide and some plants this weekend. And that humidity meter looks perfect for a good price. Sounds like Lilly is going to get some improvements to her cage this weekend. While she is a butter/lesser, I was told it was a pastel butter. Is there any difference between this morphs?
