I don't have either, but I would go digital any time I had a choice. Have seen a lot of good things said about Hydrofarm products though.

Heat tape was origionally made for plants (seeds actually) seems like everyone uses that for reptiles. Thermostats arent use specific...now companies that cater to say reptiles will add additional safetly controls. You will start seeing the differences when you get into higher end stats like spider robotics and helix.

Here's a thread with research kitedemon did that made me reconsider the hydrofarm:
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=180077
A little scary, IMO. Lots and lots of people have had success with the hydrofarm; however failing open at full temp is too much for me to worry about; my snake will be my baby and I don't want to put him/her anywhere near that situation. When I do get a snake I am leaning towards the Hobbystat, but it's so new it seems to not have had much research put into it. So I have the luxury of waiting to see what comes of it.

Good deal. I haven't been able to find anything like that level of detailed testing for the Hobbystat, and I don't know of the manner that it fails in either; however my thinking is that it comes from a brand that is accustomed to making products for reptiles and that makes me a bit more comfortable. But time will tell just how it fares.

Re: VE Hobbystat VS Hydrofarm?
I really like my Hydrofarms! I have three of the one you posted. They're straight-forward to use, perform well, and I trust my snakes with them. I really recommend them.
