Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
I just got this e-mail from J&J reptiles, has anyone else heard of this?
DEAR FOLKS -
THE ATTACHED PIJAC ALERT is THE MOST SERIOUS THREAT to the pet industry
-and this is on the NATIONAL level -I HAVE EVER SEEN! It would put Segrest Farms
Inc and every single importer of fish, coral, reptiles, birds, and small animals
OUT OF BUSINESS, as well as all the pet shops that but these animals!
Our good buddies, the Humane Society of the United States and The
Nature Conservancy, are part of a coalition pushing HARD for adopting this
terrible and ridiculous bill without amendments!
PLEASE read carefully! PLEASE e-mail, call and fax the legislators on the
Subcommittee listed, and let them know that this would completely annihilate
an entire industry! Every importer, every pet shop, and millions of
employees OUT OF BUSINESS and WORK. Not to mention the lost of tax dollars
to the government on all those businesses and employees! And the public
wants and needs pets! Refer to PIJAC's talking points.
SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW, or fax as necessary!
Sandy Moore

Re: Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
If anyone who knows anything about the pet industry is even minorly involved, there is no way this will pass. Only fish you can sell is goldfish? No reptiles or amphibians? It's just sucking more business out of an already dried up economy.

Don't underestimate the power of the lobbyists and anti-pet organizations that are working all day every day to make this a reality. They are highly organized, well funded, and dedicated to passing this legislation.

Adam is right underestimating this is a mistake. The people looking to push this through are both well versed in the process to do so and are well funded.
Our bright light is that PIJAC and USARK are also well versed in the process to stopping this. However they are not as well funded.
Please help! PIJAC an USARK have been looking out for us. If you value your pets and your hobby reptile or not.

Hi,
Why do they never ban the animals that have caused the most damage to native wildlife in every area they are introduced?
Cats & dogs have a devastating effect when introduced to new areas - gord forbid the humane society offends the wooly thinking idiots who supply its funds by explaining their fur covered, bum licking, public pooping psycopath doesn't want to "play" with all the squirrels and birds it chases.

Re: Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
I think Dr Del may be on to something here. We need to share facts and figures. If anyone has the time to do some research, we should all know some numbers that we can use in our response letters. How many people are injured or killed each year by dogs or horses, (for instance), vs similar injuries and deaths to people caused by snakes or guppies? Facts are hard to argue with.

Re: Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
It's a really great idea, but information like that isn't going to help a whole lot in this process. HR 669 is about altering the way that USFW classifies non native species in order to protect the United States on many levels. Statistical information about common household pets will really have very little impact on your represenatives in Congress ... The real impact will come from your own polite, respectful, and personal stories about how you will be effected by a ban on species that you keep as pets or breed either for fun and/or profit and how businesses you deal with will be effected financially (i.e. you cage supplier, your rodent supplier, your local pet store, cage cleaning supplier you buy at Walmart, etc).
If this bill passes, it will be because the members of Congress that vote for it believe that their constituents don't really care about the animals that will become prohibited to keep and breed ... in many of their eyes, "why would anyone actually WANT to keep a snake" ... tell them why ... tell them how keeping your animals brings joy to your life and even how it helps the economy with money you spend. That's what will make the difference.
Also, I'm sure that in the days ahead there will be a couple different sample letters floated around on the internet in case it's difficult for you to know what to say but you still really want to help ... so definitely keep an eye out!

Re: Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
If they want to ban non native species why are they allowing horses? Horses are not native! These people blow my mind, it is so depressing to read this crap!
Payday is Friday everyone USARK is $30 and PIJAC is as little as $50 these people will save your hobby! I know every one here has a lot more invested in their animals then $50, do your self, your pets, and this country a favor! Join groups like this that are aimed at stopping useless legislation that only further inhibits your rights! Fight for your freedom if you don't then who will? This gov is aimed at limiting your rights! If we don't fight for freedom then we will lose it! Get out and do something, every one has a roll to play even if it is just sending in your $30 and writing a few letters.

Re: Pet Ban- Has anyone heard about this?
Just got off the phone with our fedex rep. and she is going to push the alert as far as she can with fedex. We are hoping that a major cooperation such as fedex will see the large economic loss they will face from this ban and have so pull.
If anyone has a good relationship with their UPS rep, delta, Continental, us airways, air france, etc, we recommend spreading the word in a professional manner and asking them to push this issue to the top as these companies can do a lot as far as waking congress up to the fact that the pet industry is more than just people wanting to keep pets, but is a vital part of our economy.
