    My tank setup

Hows it going everyone? Today was my monthly cleaning of my snakes tanks here's my basic set up for my boy, Monty. Please tell me what you think of my setup thanks.

Here I just finished washing down the tank to remove pee stains, etc.

Here I just laid down my reptile carpet over the hot side of my setup, this is where Monty will spend most of his time in his hide. I do this also to prevent burrowing.

This go around, I'm trying aspen to see how much better (if at all) it will hold in humidity.

The finished product. I have a temp thermometer in each side of the cage as well as one thats centerally located that also measures humidity.

Please tell me what you think, constructively suggest improvment. Thanks

    Re: My tank setup

what size snake do you have? that half log looks to big for the enclosure and its not the best hide. a proper hide should be closed all around and have an opening. also i suggest you get two hides so that your snake can thermoregulate, especially during these winter months.

snakes also like to burrow to feel secure. the more secure they feel the less stressed they are and the longer they may live. aspen works just fine, i have been using it for 2 years and never had a problem.

    Re: My tank setup

I have a new baby BP that is in a 10 gal for now.

I have a 1/2 log as well. I just stuff it full of the aspe. exect for a small opening at teh front and just enough room to ball up inside.

On the cool side, I have (purely temporary) the cardboard box my CHE came in It just looked so perfect I had to use it. It has a perfect sized hole on one side, and it is just the perfect size for him to ball up in. My favorite part is that when I want to get him out, I can simply open take the box out and open the flaps in the back and gently dump him out. He spends most of his time in the warm side, but enough in the cool side hide that I know he thermoregulates just fine.

I'm almost finished with my custom Water Dragon habitat. When that is done, my 20 gal tank will be converted to my BPs new home.

    Re: My tank setup

Thanks for your replies. Monty is about 900g between 3 and 4 feet long so he that hide is quite cozy for him. In fact, after eating it seems to take him a little longer to fit in his hide. I'm liking the aspen and I'm especially liking the ceramic heaters, with the UTH I'm finally able to achieve cool side temps I've been looking for without the constant glow of infrared bulbs. I know that alot of people feel like the snakes need 2 hides but he's never had two since I've had him and he's never shown signs of stress. I've had monty almost a year to the day and he's never not eaten, once.

    Re: My tank setup

just becareful with the log hide. most people dont use them because they arent adequate for bp to feel secure in also they often are the cause of wood mites. just cuz they dont show stress doesnt mean that they arent

For a 3-4ft bp that enclosure looks a little cramped. it doesnt look like there is any floor space for it to move around, i could be wrong, the last pic is hard to tell.

    Re: My tank setup

Get those temps up a bit and it should be fine. If he fits the log hide snug then its fine. Anyway your pinstripe is Hizott!

    Re: My tank setup

thanks, I didn't know this but seems like Brian from BHB reptile is a bit of a celeb in the herp world, he picked her (my pinny) out for me. He laid out all the fems and told me that I should pick the one with the stripes running almost all the way down her back. I can't wait for her to get as big as Monty. My temps are 84 cool side with that bomb a$$ed ceramic heater, 73%RH since Monty's in shed and warm side temp of 96*. He can't completely fit in the hide @ the moment and I think its because I fed him a HUGE rat for the first time. He ate it no problem but I think he's basically undone the button on his pants. I'll probably be getting a 55 gal for him for christmas so that will free that tank up for another snake. Thanks for your replies
