So if he's hiding, it is normal not that he doesn't like the heat up high near the branch? Although, he was sold to me as "7 months old," he is 275 grams and almost 3' long - so he could be older.

What should the heat gradient be? High 70's to 90? Or 80 to 90? How do you measure the temps at the different points on the branches?

I generally run 90's basking, 80's high 70's ambient. Then turn off the basking and run a 80's 70's nighttime temp.

Temp Guns work to measure any point of a cage.

Oddly enough, my carpet seemed to react to the red light as well. The light was the only heat in her tank and she would twitch ot sorta strike everytime it switched on. We switched to a ceramic heat emitter and the reaction stopped.

That's a pretty cool setup! I would also recommend a temp gun for this type of enclosure. It would make your life much easier so that you know there are no really hot spots especially. Very cool though, i've always kinda wanted a carpet.

I switched lamps between our new Rosy Boa and the JCP and things are much better. About 90 on the top of the branch (suction cup therm/hydrog), and about 80 on the ground not too far from the lamp, a log under which it is cooler, and no more belly heat. Is it OK to go w/out belly heat for a JCP?

my younger carpets dont have belly heat and they do just fine... they'll get to where they need to be in the cage. they're extremely hardy anyway...

Great to know. Thanks. He seemed to like the belly heat, but we yanked it away. Sorry, dude. Now he's not under the log much.
