How long frozen rats last in freezer?
I was wondering if anyone knows how long frozen rats last in the freezer. I have a few from my last order that are just a little over a year old. They still look fine, just like they did when I got them, but my ball python hasn’t eaten well at all this summer. In the past she has really eaten well during the summer and slacked off during the winter. Nothing has changed in her aquarium, everything is fine as far as hides, temp., humidity, etc. I may be grasping at straws but I was wondering if maybe she isn’t eating them because they have been in the freezer so long.

Rule of thumb is 1.5 years vacuum sealed in freezer (and staying frozen the whole time). 6 months in freezer once no longer vacuum sealed. So 2 years total is the max.
However, even if vacuum sealed for 2 weeks, the prey is only good for 6 months once taken out of vacuum seal and stored in plastic bags (like ziplock).
If you are having issues with prey getting "stale," many online retailers of Frozen Prey (perfectprey.com I know does this) offer smaller packages. It's more expensive per prey item, but cheaper in the long-run because you aren't wasting food.

Here's a link to a recent thread that discusses this exact issue: https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...hlight=freezer.

Re: How long frozen rats last in freezer?
It depends on the type of freezer you are using. Frost-free freezers stay frost-free by periodically allowing the temperature in the freezer to rise above 32 degrees causing the frost to melt. This doesn't matter for short term food storage, but it's the reason that they don't work well for long term food storage.
