    Snake story for the day

This sort of thing has never happened to me, so I wanted to share my snake encounter story of the day! We just had a heavy rainstorm come through in the past 2 hours (there's apparently a hurricane passing by?), and I was headed home when I noticed some debris in the road. I unthinkingly maneuvered my car so that I would drive over it, but right before I did I noticed it looked like coiled up black piping. I continued to drive before it hit me that it might've very well have been a snake!! Of course I turned around and headed back just to see if I was right, and lo and behold a 4-5ft. Northern Black Racer is right on the double yellow line! So what's a girl to do but pull over to the shoulder, get out her trusty umbrella and head back over to get that snake out of the road. It was a bit of a challenge because an umbrella isn't exactly the best hook (the first time I touched him with it he turned right around and grabbed it! Made me jump quite a bit, since he didn't seem all that active) but I was determined to get him out of the street so I managed to get him pointed towards the grass and during a break in the cars pushed him right across to safety. Unfortunately, it looked like he might've already been run over near the end of his tail because there was definitely some sort of prolapse going on, but I figured that a) getting him out of the street meant a better chance of survival and b) being run over until he died would have been terrible, so I didn't want to just leave him there.

People that were driving by were slowing down to watch me (I don't think it's very often that they see a girl wearing American Eagle-esque clothing standing in the rain with an umbrella to push a snake across a street, lol) and a couple of people smiled or gave me a thumbs up. I know I could've just driven on but what was the chance that someone else would drive by and help? I'm just happy I seemed to be in the right place at the right time, and hope the snake makes it.

    Nicely done.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?
