I'm pretty sure it all depends on where it happens and the circumstances around the death. Even with non-venomous deaths, it isn't a death sentence for the snake. The snake that killed the little girl in Florida a couple years ago was actually treated for stab wounds inflicted by the "owner" and placed in a new, more experienced home.
