.25" Screen for Rats
New rat rack i built with the mortar tub is ready to be filled.
top 3 is using .5 screen and bottom 2 .25. I set up the 2 .25" screen as i was putting ASF in there to breed but ended up selling them all off today and no longer wanted them.
So my questions is can rats still eat though it, im sure they can as their teeth arent .25 wide. Also thought about putting mice in the bottom 2 but idk if tubs will be too high for them to reach the valve.

With mice and asf's in tubs you can turn a ceramic ramekin over so they can use it like a stool, I do that with my dwarf rats so they can reach the water bottles.
I've never tried 1/4 inch screen for rats, not sure if they can eat through it or not
I'd be monitoring it to make sure they can, just throw in a say 5 pieces of food and see if it's there in the morning

I toss in food all the time on cleaning days and they eat that over chewing the screen as its easier.
I think im gonna cut out the section where food goes and take out the .25 and stable .5 in there for them to eat and leave rest .25
And im already using that turned over owl trick in a grow out tub

Probably the best bet, they do still struggle some even getting food through the 1/2 inch wire.

Best bet and easy fix as only need to replace a 8x20 piece so it works out.

Re: .25" Screen for Rats
I did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. seems to be working really well for me at least. I did bottom 3 racks ASF's and the top 4 rats. I like to keep everything on one watering system just for my own ease of maintenance. I flipped a couple 2 x 4 blocks and it doubles as a riser and a chew block. I used the lowes tubs and they haven't started to chew anywhere YET.

They wont chew if you have it within 1/8 from the screen

My plan
I kind of ran into that same problem as I have limited space but still wan't to breed rats, and asfs... Using the medium mortar tubs I built my rack using .25 cloth.... but like the freedom breeder style I had the "feed trough" up front about 3 inches wide. That 3 inches is covered in only .5 hardware cloth, I've found that if you keep that filled the baby asfs can't get out cuz the food is blocking, but at the same time it allows me to put rats, asfs, whatever I want in any tub with no worry. I hope this makes sense. I'm at work right now or I would upload a picture, if still unclear I get home at 7pm est and will upload then, or feel free to text me and i will send a picture. 440 315 4373
