New blood, kind of sad story

Got a blood python basically dropped off at my doorstep today from a friend of a friend. He is a little bit skinny I think as he is a little bit triangular shape. He has a pretty wicked case of mites. He was also in a tub that I think is to small for him, he weighs about 10 pounds and the tub is about 3 feet by 1.5 feet by 6 inches.
I set him up with some newspaper, a nice big water bowl, temps 85 warm 78 cold, do not have a hide big enough for him but will by tomorrow or Thursday at the latest. Humidity is hovering around 60%. What size tub is best for them? I know most people like a 4 x 2 cage and I will probably build one this summer but until then will he be ok in this tub or should I get a larger one? Also can anybody tell me what species he is? I am pretty terrible at telling them apart.

Thats your everyday farmed Blood Python (Python Brongersmai)

    Temps are good

He would certainly appreciate a bigger tub, an Iris VE175 would rock, otherwise a big underbed box would suffice. That tub looks like a 41qt, thats too small.

No hides needed, just a bunch of newspaper, he'll find his way under it. This also mimics their natural behavior in the wild.

I hope you have the Provent-A-Mite treatment in full swing and what ever you do if you have other snakes around keep this guy quarantined big-time.

Provent is WELL worth the moolah! Go through at least 2-3 treatments at about 20-30 day intervals...meh, you probably know the drill!

Gee, I wish I had friends of friends that would just dump off blood pythons like that!

Re: New blood, kind of sad story

Yea I ordered a can of Provent A Mite as soon as I saw the first little black dots so it should be here in a few days.
This is the second snake to get dropped off at my door. The first was a normal BP female who had multiple scars from burns and rat bites, and RI and she was extremely aggressive towards me. Now she is all healed and a sweet heart.
Im glad the only thing that seems to be wrong with the blood is the mites. But of course he will stay quarantined for a few months just to be sure.
I can't seem to think of a name for this bugger either so if anybody has any suggestions I would love to hear them!!

Re: New blood, kind of sad story

Everybody and their brother suggests "chemicals" aka Poisions..
If one is diligent mites can be eliminated with water....Soaking and diligent cleaning..This particular species is often called a swamp snake, they have no problem or complaints with soaking and mites drown..A snake that lives 20-25 plus years was probably never treated with "poisions"..IMO..
