    Grey Banded King Questions

I've always loved these snakes, and they are one of the species on my (hopefully!) future breeding list. Appearence-wise I was hoping to find myself a blair's phase with thick orange bands, as well as one with no orange at all. Does anyone know how this workes genetically? Are they genetic mutations or a result of selective breeding? (So would my offspring look like one or the other-or a mash up of them both?)

Also, do grey-bandeds exhibit the cannabalistic trait like other kings? I always assumed they did, but I saw a pair kept in the same enclosure at a zoo (no keeper around to ask.) I've wondered about it ever since.

As for pattern im not too sure if its selective, or just a locale thing. Cannibalism however is possible, but grey bands tend to avoiding eating other snakes more so than other kings. Prefer lizards.

Most of your color and patterns are associated with locality. As far as cannibalism, graybands are not known for it and can be kept communally. It's the getula complex that you have to watch for.

    Re: Grey Banded King Questions

I have two alterna phase and a blairs phase east sanderson grey banded kings. There patterns are kind of tied in to locality but not like you are referring. Say you have a pair of 277's, they could be alterna or blairs phase. As far as keeping them together I would not recommend it.

    Re: Grey Banded King Questions

The locality is in terms mostly of specific countys. Sanderson, which is in Terrell County, TX is more likely to have blairs phase (from my experience), and a little more to the East in Val Verde county, you are more likely to find Alterna phase. But, it's not a 100% thing. There are both phases in all area's that are inhabited by the Grey bands. Marathon, Sanderson, Alpine, Lajitas, or Val Verde....if you are lucky enough to find a grey band it could be either phase. Locality really just accounts for the majority found.

And again, grey bands are reluctant to eat other snakes so if you HAD to house them together, im sure similar sized specimens would do fine if they are well fed. Roy Engeldorf (owner of the Outback Oasis motel in Sanderson) has kept them together on many occasions. As well as spoken to me about their lack of interest in cannibalism. Considering he deals with them on a pretty much daily basis, im sure it's not much of an issue.

    Re: Grey Banded King Questions

I certainly wasn't planning on keeping them together regardless to the answer of the question, I was just thirsting for the knowleadge. =P

I know their appearence is locality driven. My question is what would happen if you bred two different localities together. I'm assuming the differences formed because of natural selection, so a single offspring of a pairing would pick up traits from both parents, but I didn't know for sure.
