Mazuri 6F recall

Hey All,

Just wanted to inform everyone who uses Mazuri feed that there is a huge recall.
I'm subscribed to Mazuri's Facebook page and they announced it this morning.
I myself feed Mazuri, so I just wanted everyone to be careful!

Quoted from their post:

"Expanded Voluntary Recall of Mazuri® Feed Products Due to Potential Elevated Vitamin D Level

(St. Paul, Minn.) July 13, 2012 – PMI Nutrition International is expanding a voluntary recall to include the additional varieties of the Mazuri® feed products with specific lot codes listed below, due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels. Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death, or otherwise be harmful to animals if fed for extended periods, potentially resulting in lack of interest in eating, weight loss and possible joint stiffness.

The products listed in the attachment with specific lot numbers are being recalled due to analytical test results on additional lots of retained samples that indicate a potential for elevated levels of vitamin D. These products are being added to those from earlier recalls announced on July 3, 2012 and July 6, 2012* which were initiated after receiving a small number of customer complaints which involved animal illness and small bird mortality.

The products were manufactured at the Richmond, IN feed plant and were distributed nationwide and to a few international customers starting April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012. Dealers have been contacted and asked to hold these products and to notify and retrieve the product from customers. The affected product should not be used, and where applicable, be returned to the retail dealer."

I had 2 rats(sisters from different litters, who were bred by a friend) die out of nowhere within the specified packaging date . Makes me wonder if they were affected from this?
They did have a loss in appetite and significant weight loss.
And I recall another member have crazy random die outs too. I wonder if they feed Mazuri as well?

I'm not too familiar with what the effects of excess Vitamin D are on rats but if you had healthy girls start dropping weight and then suddenly die I think you could have gotten some of the tainted batch.
Just in case do you have access to a alternate brand of lab block such as Harlan/Native Earth/Sand Valley Farms or Kent?

20 somethings...I'm assuming there's no difference?

I have a whole bunch of bags that fall within that time frame. Adults are eating the babies, the food stretches out for a long time, and they have either stopped producing or have had very low counts.

Oh Yikes.
Sounds drastic.
A great example on how food sure makes a difference in breeding.

Hi,
Was reading your posts and I also had problems with the feed. Am new to the forum but wanted to ask if any more of you had or had heard of any more mice dying that had eaten Mazuri or LabDiet feed. I have a mouse colony and recently had 22 male mice all die within 4 hours of each other. I had opened a new bag of LabDiet 5001 about 5 days prior and it is the only thing new that was introduced to the colony. Only my males died, my females were fine, although I removed all of the feed immediately and haven't fed LabDiet since. Have you guys heard anything else from people breeding mice regarding strange die outs or problems with the feed? The mill date on my bag was just outside of the recall date but the food was poison to my mice, as soon as I removed it my surviving mice recovered. Any information would be great.
