Reticulated Siren
Just when you think you've seen it all...this is an awesome newly-described salamander...and it's BIG! (& also, it's totally adorable)

Good information, I am sooo ignorant about salamanders. But now not AS bad as before.
The one thing I found that you can count on about Balls is that they are consistent about their inconsistentcy.

That's what I was thinking too. Can you imagine stepping into some muddy water & catching a glimpse of one of these near you? But I love their facial "decoration"-
they blend in with plants so well.

This species is not a new discovery. I remember watching education programs when I was a kid that had them on it.

"specimens" were found as far back as 1944 and 1970, but only a handful. they were a local myth or folklore, until some scientific researchers got serious about studying them and caught one in 2009 and a few more in 2014. so it's not exactly new, but we have a more information on it now, named it and figured out it scientific classification - kingdom, phylum, class, etc. etc. and published it: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/ar...0207460#sec006
it's a 2foot long salamander and the newest, largest vertebrate species to be scientifically studied in over 100years and i think that's really kool. and i love it's pattern!
