Some minor things can be treated at home some cannot the main issue if to know when something is minor and when something is not, the other issue is to find the right vet if needed and know how to gauge if you are dealing with the right vet.
Over the years I have seen people over reacting over minor things and under estimate things that were serious.
So you need experience, need to know what to expect at the vet and be in charge or your animal's health.
So what can be treated at home
Minor cuts or injuries, minor burns, minor scale rot. Some things can also be done for more serious issues to help alleviate symptoms while waiting for a vet appointment.
What cannot be treated at home
Severe wounds/injuries, abscess, severe burns, severe scale rots etc
Things you should expect from a vet for the most common ailments keepers may deal with.
A culture for a RI, if RI is diagnose have the right INJECTABLE antibiotic prescribed for no less than 30 days.
Adress husbandry and do a fecal for feeding issues (most feeding issues are husbandry related but an inexperience vet will overlook this and come up with all kind of unecessary test and recommend for feeding to tube feeding)
Not prescribe an antibiotic just in case, there is either a reason or there are not and in this case no anti-biotic should be prescribed.
Etc
