In looking for a new house to live in (rent) I've found that by mentioning "snakes" right from the go is a bad idea.

Once I talk to the landlord/roommates and they see i'm a normal guy that is very easy to get along with and talk to - I slip in the old "oh yeah i forgot to mention..I have snakes" and usually i just have to explain how easy they are to care for and tame and they won't get out etc....and they are like "OK...as long as you keep them caged..i don't have a problem "

I find it easiest just to not mention it around people I don't know..but family is different. Luckily, my family doesn't mind a bit.
