The dumbo gene?
Can someone help me figure out this breed?
is it recessive? dom? co-dom?
am I worried about health issues? I have been googling but having a hard time finding solid info.
I just got an albino dumbo female to dinker with. since I sell a lot of my feeders off as pets

Re: The dumbo gene?
Dumbo ears are a simple recessive so since your female has dumbo ears you would have to breed her to either a dumbo eared male or a male that has top ears but you know it carries the gene for dumbo ears.
As far as health concerns related to the dumbo ear gene, I've not seen any in my own rat breeding. Of course if you inbreed too much you might see something or another genetic issue related to color/pattern, etc. Specifically though as related to dumbo as far as I'm aware it's just a gene that changes ear placement and shape (also makes their heads appear slightly broader). Some people say dumbo's have nicer personalities, some say that's a load of bull. Personally all my dumbo's tend to be quite nice rats and are some of the best moms in the breeder group.

Our Dumbos are far friendlier than the other rats.
Like Jo said simple recessive.

Re: The dumbo gene?
I agree, my dumbos are nicer than my top ears - well, maybe not nicer, but more outgoing and more relaxed. I've gotten to where most of my production now are dumbos - I have very few top ears left in my breeding colony.

Re: The dumbo gene?
i was cleaning cages last night and realised i have 1.1 albino dumbos babies
the parents are just normal albinos so it has to be recessive

Re: The dumbo gene?
Our dumbo girl was more of a clown than the other girls. She also had chronic respiratory infections, so her clown-i-ness might have been more inner ear related... Her respiratory issues weren't related to being a dumbo, they were more because her owners when she was a baby sucked.
