The HET game, how does it work?
Alright people, I'm poor and I love designer balls, so i'm gonna have to learn this het thing lol. I know the basics I guess, but just need to be sure now. I would absolutely love a clown, and I see 100% clown hets quite often. When a snake is 100% het that just means they carry they gene for clown, but its not represented in there color pattern right? Also het is just short for heterozygous? And the animail that carries the trait and shows it is a homozygous? AHhh!!
But what do I have to do to produce that clown? Do I breed 2 100% hets for clown together and hope for the best?

You are correct. A 100% het is a gene carrier, but looks normal. If you breed a het to het, each egg has a 1/4 chance of being a visual, 1/2 chance of being a het, and 1/4 chance of being a normal. Therefore, the normal looking off spring are 66% possible hets, which means they may be hets or normals. You do not know without breeding them.

One thing about hets, especially simple recessives, is that you must buy with confidence. When you cannot "see" the genetics you are buying based on the honesty of the breeder. Be very careful and shop around, ask others, get references so you don't get burned.

I started reading that but its kinda hard to understand. I wish someone would make something like that but in dummy form lol. I'll keep reading it...But usually if you buy 2 hets, and say they really are 100% hets, does it usually prove out? Or do even 100%'s not always produce the visual?

what happens when you take 2 recessives and breed them together? Like an albino, and a clown? What would that produce?

that would produce a 100% double het for both clown and albino

woah....
so they would all be normal offspring carrying both genes? But whats the point of a double het? What happens when you breed double hets to each other? Do you now have a 50/50 shot at a albino or a clown? Meaning you don't know if your going to get a albino or a clown?

In your example mating two double hets together will give you a small chance to produce an animal that shows both the clown pattern with an albino coloring.

The point of having double hets is that you can then produce (with some luck) a double recessive morph. In the example already given, you would have a 1 in 16 chance of producing an albino clown.... a snake with the clown pattern but albino coloring.
Another well known example of a double recessive morph is snows. This is an albino axanthic. Since albino removes the black coloring, and axanthic removes the yellow coloring, you are left with a nearly pure white snake.
