Re: Question About My Set Up
ok well any hide should be very snug of the snake... theyll have a greater sense of security if they can touch all sides and top of the hide

thanks,
When you say its way way to small for him, what are you basing that on. if the snake can fit through the opening and fit in the hide then its not way way to small, its could be a little too small but not way way
. Do this. Imagine you had another snake that was exactly the same size as the one you have. If you could cram two of them in the same hide then its too big. When I up my hide size I go to a size that two of my snake could be shoe horned into and I up the size when I could no longer fit another snake half her size. That may seem like a weird way of thinking about it but I am kinda weird. Just remember that your snake does want lots of space it wants security. My hides leave just enough room for her to bring a mouse inside an eat it.
Here is a picture of my setup to show you the size of my snake vs the size of the hides. For the record this setup is too big, to close to a window, has too much head room, and is in a room that gets too much foot traffic. This is only a good example of hide size.

Re: Question About My Set Up
Hi,
I would think about covering the sides and back with aquarium background then adding a layer of insulating material such as foamboard, reflectix or cork sheet.
If humidity is still a problem when it is up and running you could also cover the rest of the screentop with the foil and tape then cut out the circle needed for the lamp to shine through - but try it first as that is a relatively easy fix.
They like nice and tight hides so plan for that when replacing the cardboard one.
The little dial thing at the back is probably inaccurate I'm afraid - those dial types seem only to be fit for throwing at the people trying to sell them.
If you can find the digital acurite weather station type with probe then the base unit of that should give you a fairly decent reading at ground level where the animal will be spending its time and the probe is great for putting inside the hides to get the temps it will spend most of its time in.
It can take a little tweaking at first to get things set up right but , once it is done, you can feel proud of a job well done an only have a panic attack and check everything two or three times a day.
I can't see any thermostat probe so could you tell me what heating sources you have and how they are controlled?
