    HELP, BP skin damage

    hey everyone,

just at the worst time, my bp seems to have hurt himself as I was feeding, and as he is a problem feeder, I really shouldnt be handling him at all, but he seems to have cut or damaged himself. I didn't get a good look, but it looks like it may be an open wound. I will try to get pictures up as soon as I can, but could someone give any advice what to do in terms of husbandry? Should I raise the temperature? lower? leave it as it is? and what about humidity?

And lastly, would it be worth it to hold him to get a picture?

    thanks
    Jamie (jrosen123)

A picture would be great, just try not to disturb him much.

Switch your substrate to paper towel. Apply a little bit of nesporin to the wound (the kind without the pain killer).

Temps should be normal at ~92 and humidity should be at least 50%

I would also disinfect everything in the cage to make sure the wound doesn't get infected.

Could it be a bite from the mouse?

    Re: HELP, BP skin damage

thanks for the quick reply, but not it couldn't be from a mouse because i feed f/t, and i cant change anything immedietly, but i will try as soon as I can. I will have to buy neosporin tomorow, and I will try and get a picture later tonight, or tomorow. thanks for the help, i will keep everyone updated.

Where on your BP is the injury located?

    Re: HELP, BP skin damage

I can't really specify where exactly the wound is, but it is either slightly above or below the vent, along his side. I don't want to disturb him anymore than I have to after he just ate. I will post pictures tomorrow, as well as buy some neosporin. I will change his substrate to paper towel tomorow as well.

ps. would polysporin work aswell? as long as it doesn't have the pain killer right?

No pain killer or extra strength.
I'm not sure of polysporin is an offbrand or not..

    Re: HELP, BP skin damage

so is neosporin just like a cream in a little tube? and i just apply a dab to the injured area?

sorry for all the questions its just that I have been battling with this snake to get him to eat, and when he finally does eat on his own he gets injured

and i just read that polysporin is pretty much a "canadian" version of neosporin but doesnt have one ingredient neosporin has. anyway i will look for neosporin but im pretty sure polysporin will work too, i have used it with my geckos

Neosporin does come in a tube (yellow, I think) and it's more of a thick, clear gel than a cream. You can apply it with a clean Q-Tip, or just apply directly with your finger.

    Re: HELP, BP skin damage

It may just be a bit of torn skin from shedding (based on where it is)... whenever I get blood on my substrate it is from tearing during shed.

If not, then you need to examine your enclosure, if he did not get it from a shed, or from the prey (since you feed FT) then you want to remove anything in the enclosure that puts him at risk.

The wound will likely heal just fine, but you do not want a reoccurence or a further injury to the area before it heals.

    Re: HELP, BP skin damage

he is actually pretty close to shedding, his eyes are "clouded over" and since we received him at the store (august 08) he has not shed. Could it be related to the fact that he has not shed?

this snake is the snake which relates to almost all of my posts.

So this is the second time he has eaten on his own, and since we have had him, he has only eaten about 4 times (two assisted feeding in the store, and two on his own once I took him home)
