40G Tank

I have an empty 40g tank. I'm trying to think of something to put in it. I really want a lizard or a snake other than a ball, corn, or red tail boa. (My red tail will probably go into it when she gets big enough, but until then, I can house something else in it. So if you had an empty 40g, what would you put in it?

1) It has to be able to live in the 40g tank into adult hood.

2) It has to be relatively inexpensive to keep (feeding wise. Heat is no problem)

I probably won't put anything in it for a while since we are moving, but I just wanted to get some ideas.

Beardie!

I used to house my adult beardie in a 40-gallon and he was great! They are tons of fun to keep - more maintenance than a BP though (feed and clean poop daily). But their personalities are to die for. Die laughing that is.

I was thinking of a beardie. I have tons of empty tanks right now, from 5g all the way up to the 40g. Would it be more cost effective to breed my own feeder insects? (crickets or feeder roaches?)

On the other hand, while he doesn't have any for sale yet, a guy at a local petstore has a group of dwarf moniters. They are really neat looking. (To me anyway) and about the same size as a beardie (or smaller).

Beardies need room to run, I wouldn't suggest a 40 gal tank for them (of coarse that is just my opinion

For a beardie (adult full grown) I would go with something more like a 75 gal tank.

The bigger the enclosure the happier your beardie will be

I could always use the 40g as a transitional tank while I build a custome enclosure. I had a friend who, after seeing my little Tyke (may he rest in peace) went out and got two of her own. She kept them together (I've heard you shouldn't do that, but there were no dominance issues.) in a huge homemade enclosure. This thing was so big, both her and myself could have probably fit inside of it comfortably sitting. It was simple construction, made of wood, plexi on one side, and a screen on the top and on the door. Does anyone have any plans for something similar to that?

And I know I should be asking this in the bearded dragon board, but how long does it take a bearded dragon to reach full adult size?

It work as a transitional tank. I am not sure at what age they reach full size. My girl was full grown when I purchased her. Recycling Goddess has great plans for beardie enclosures on her website. I would check it out

I bought the "shell" of the enclosure (for a lack of better terms) from a show this past weekend. It was in sad shape, but the structure was good. So I gutted it and completely re-did the interior and exterior. I think the previous owner may have had an Iggy housed in it. I wish I was smart enough to take before pics, but alas I was not... I added the shelving, tile flooring, etc. It looked nothing like that when I brought it home. It is actually pretty simple construction. I could get you the measurements and required supplies if you like. Just let me know

I focus mainly on snakes. But if I had an empty 40 gallon, I might be tempted to get a Blue Tongue Skink. I have always wanted to keep one, and I think they are very underrated.
