    Why won't he???

So I thought I'd post this thread to see if I can get some answers. I have a male pastel (2007) who I got a girlfriend for at a show to see if i could get some pastels this year. However, being with her several times in the last month, neither snake has shown interest in the other. Now, I also have a 2005 blackback that has been itching to breed. So, just for curiousity's sake to see if it was maybe the female that wasn't receptive, I put the female with my blackback male. He instantly started to court her, and by the next morning, he was locked with her, and locked two more times. Another interesting part is that the blackback male put every inch of his body over the female, as if he was afraid I was gonna take her away. Weird huh? I was just wondering what the reasons could be for the male not wanting to breed....he is producing sperm plugs and all, and he weighs about 1100-1200 grams.

    Re: Why won't he???

It may be as simple as he is not ready to breed. My original Het Pied male was almost 1000 grams at 9 months old, and 1500 grams by 18 months old. However, he still did not breed until his third winter. Some of them just take longer. Also, he may be ready, and just not "compatible" with that female. I am not sure it works that way, but if your mom just dropped you in a room with a male human, you might not like him, and he might not like you. That is the best way I can describe what I think happens sometimes. Not sure if that is the way it works, but that is what I've told myself.

The other thing to look at is that depending on how long you've had that female she may not be acclimated. I got a female that took 5 months to get acclimated and it took her 1+/- before she laid eggs.

They can be very sensitive to change when it comes to breeding. It might be that they don't go this year.

Thats the side of this that many people don't see.
I have an 06 pastel that this is his first year to breed just cause he didn't want anything to do with it till now.

I'm with Tim on this one. Some boys take their sweet time maturing. And some are just picky. I have a couple of boys who prefer one or two girls and shun the rest. The female can be tail wagging and leaving a trail and the male just curls up and stares off into space.

    Re: Why won't he???

My male pastel would lock up with my arm given the chance last year, but wouldn't touch a female when I tried this year, He finally got going a few weeks ago, but still to this day wants nothing to do with my spider (mainly cuz thats the girl I really want him to breed) but think your issue could be just the fact those two dont like each other or he really hasn't got everything figured out yet, either option is completely feasible. But I would recommend that you just keep trying.

Wow...I really didn't think with those viewpoints. Especially yours, Tim. And he is a GORGEOUS pastel too.......I guess Shadari (the female) is on the same page as me....just cause he's hot doesn't mean I should have to want him!
