Personally, I don't think it is best way to accurate way to measure. The shed can shrink or stretch but it does give you a good idea how long your snake is. Only way to really accurate measure your snake is when he/she ultimately reach their end of life.

Its just my 2 cents.

Nah, they stretch out because their old skin is very stretchy... that's how people have scammed with giant python shed skins to make it seem like they were bigger.

Shed usually stretches with any snake I have seen. The best way to measure a snake is by taking a piece of yarn or small rope and going from one end to the other and marking the material. Then measure that.


There are supposed to be some sites online which allow you to take a pic of your snake next to a common item (ruler, dollar bill, ect) and then measure it by that. Never looked up the site though, not sure how accurate it is.

It's actually pretty acurate (the software, not shed measuring). There used to be a link to it from this website, lemme see if I can't find it for you.

Not accurate from experience...

But, what I have done which worked was when I put the snake back in his tank (I have a glass reptile tank set-up), I let him crawl on the front edge (there are rocks, waterbowl, hides, plants, etc all over the place, so he tends to crawl along the front edge where it's relatively free-space to get to one of his hides. Then it is easier to measure. I've had him crawl through the hamster tubing when he was a baby to get him to stretch out but he's too big for that now.

I just use a piece of string, from head to tail trust me you need another set of hands to get this done, but then you can then measure.
