    Re: thermostat

The thermometer just measures the temperatures, a thermostat actually controls a heating device to reach a desired temperature.

So if you have a heat source that gets the temperatures in the right range all the time w/o control, then I'd say you wouldn't need a thermostat.

Usually this is not the case, so yeah, you'll need a stat.

Spyder Robotics makes GREAT tstats with also GREAT customer service.

I have no experience with Helix, but I've read they make good ones also.

Ranco and Johnson Controls make non-proportional tstats that are less expensive.

    Re: thermostat

Digital Thermometers with probes are a must

I have 2 tanks set up with t-stat's and 1 set up with a rheostat (dimmer switch) and have had success with both types of temp controls. I do keep a closer eye on the rheostat though, but that's just me.

I have a Zoomed rheostat and it just doesn't work
Seriously, on low, the heat pad stays 140 or so.

I've used rheos' in the past as well, but Tstats are the way to go. Spyder Robotics makes a great one.

WOW! I have not run into an issue like that. I have never had a problem with the one tank on the rheostat. Honestly, I never planned on keeping the setup like that, but it was a rescued BP and I needed a tank setup fairly quickly. I had everything I needed except a thermostat, so I ran out to Petco and picked up the rheostat (it was most cost effective at the time), and since it has yet to fail me, I figured I would stick with it for now

    I looooove Spyder Robotics.

My mom plugged vacuum cleaner into it so the fuse broke, but Dion (owner) is buying me a new fuse and all I have to pay for is shipping.

His customer service is great, he's a nice guy, and his products is SUHWEET.

I second this. I don't know about the other brands, but Sypder Robotics will not let you down. Dion I think is the guys name, but he usually ships next day. He builds them to order. I have 2 of the Herpstat's, just the regular ones. Not the Herpstat II. I had to quaranteen that's why I got two of the same instead of the Herpstat II.

They seem expensive, but totally worth it for your snake's well being.

Yeah man, I told Dion and he said I was the first one to have broken a Herpstat this way

They're usually radiant heaters and only once it was an iron... so, I'm special for breaking my Herpstat an original way

Actually, the Herpstat II and Pro (maybe the ND too) have resettable fuses, so you wouldn't have to send it in to Dion.
