I have an African Giant Black.....great pede.... easy easy easy to keep.

Just do not do mite treatments with them in the room.....LOL

I feed mine misc veggies and fruits....mainly lettuce and some apple here and there. I keep mine on peat moss and mist a couple times a week to a month in a small hatchling tub with a lid.

Will work on some pics here soon.

They require hard wood such as oak to munch on as well as leaf debris. That is their main food item. No soft woods such as pine. Oak good. Pine BAD. They like their fruits and veggies rotten. So that apple you left in the back of the fridge that has turned to mush is perfect for them. They like bananas and lettuce. And sweet potato. I feed mine baby food and hermit crab food often. Make sure everything is organic or washed really well.

They are easy to keep, but sometimes they are rough handled before they get to you. Do not drop!!!

If you can get the giant black millipedes, I suggest you do. They are now illegal to import and the prices have jumped!

I keep Florida Ivory millis. I keep them mainly on cocofiber mixed in with leaf mulch. I feed apples, squash, carrots and lettuce.
I mist their cage every couple of days. Thats really all there is to it!

I used to have several different kinds of millies. The Giant African blacks make GREAT pets. Easy care, and they can live for awhile. My first one, "Minion" lived for 9 years!!! She absolutely LOVED chick peas and baby corn, but HATED carrots. Weird huh?

Re: anyone out there with milli's

I had a pair of Black African giants when I was younger...I'm 18 now, think i was 10 or so when I had them. Definetly awesome pets, I'll never forget the way their legs were like velcro on clothes! I housed mine in a relatively small terrarium (10 gallon, roughly) and like the other people here, fed them decaying plant matter from the yard (especially oak leaves), pieces of bark/wood, and supplemented with vegetables (lettuce and carrots were favored, though apples and grapes were popular too). They only had a heat source during winter, and it was a ~100 watt bulb.
They aren't here anymore, but I sure enjoyed looking after them. Later my father found 2 wild milipedes from the woods of our property, and though they didn't compare with the Africans they were quite large for wild VT milis. They don't do so well in captivity- neither of them lived longer than a year in the same situation.
    Good luck!

I had one, but found out the hard way I'm allergic. My arm was breaking out worse each time I handled it. Sadly I had to give it to someone else. Very cool animals, and easy to care for.
