I think my guy is getting ready to shed.

Ok, Ive been trying to read up on everything BP!! Theres soooo much to worry about, however, I think keeping the temps and humidity are key? I noticed my bp has clouded eyes. I keep his tank about 80 to 85, however right now my heater is not working so when im not home and no heat is on, the air around the top of the tank gets to about 75. I just got a heating pad for under the tank, I just cant keep the tank from getting cold, so that has helped keep the tank where he lays warm. So if hes going to shed, should I get the tank warmer? And what are some other signs that hes starting to shed?

Re: I think my guy is getting ready to shed.

My guy just went through a shed cycle. He started off by not coming out of his hide AT ALL (he typically sticks his head out of the hide throughout the evening). This odd behavior forced me to examine him. I noticed a slightly pink belly. It was a few days later I saw clouded eyes so I was sure. I wasn't able to feed him for 2 weeks and I left him alone for that entire time.

It ended up being a very smooth shed and all I did was increase the humidity. I made sure to have it at at least 70%. I'm not sure about the temperature requirement but the humidity is a huge plus.

Clouded eyes = sure sign he's going to shed. As well as a pink belly for the first few days and dulling in colour. Be sure to leave him alone as much as possible as they tend to get very shy and stressed easily during this process. It's okay for them to skip a meal during shed.

There should be a constant temperature gradient. Cool/warm side.

    Warm side: 92 F
    Cool side: 82 F
    Ambient air: 78-85 F

Make sure you're measuring these temps with a digital thermometer with a PROBE set directly between the substrate and the bottom of the tank. Give or take a few degrees won't make a difference but I wouldn't recommend letting the temps go above 98 or drop below 78.

Here's a solution for helping keep steady temps in a glass tank: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=78239
It helps me with my 20 Gallon

You don't need to increase the temps during shed. Only humidity.
On a day to day basis, it should be between 50-60% Measured once again with a digital hygrometer, not the stick on
70-80% During shedding. Make sure it doesn't get too moist in there or you could get a case of scale rot.

    Hope this helps, good luck!
