I have tegus, and I really like them a lot. I have Argentine Black and White, and Argentine Reds.. and currantly and temporaily, a blue tegu.
I highly reccomend tegus myself, all the other lizards I've seen/owned, the tegus are the most responsive IMO. My reds are super tame and sweet and seem to enjoy interacting with me. Argentines B&Ws I've seen a lot that seem to love their owners and follow them about begging for attention.
