    HELLPPP Choosing

Ok heres the deal, We wanted to get a BRB but after talking to many breeders and reading everything I could find we think that we have ruled it out d/t nippyness, higher humidity needs, much greater care needs, etc.
We are now looking at either a Nicaraguan or a Dumerils
BOTH have about the same care needs, both appear to be about the same adult size (being generally smaller boas - which is a main factor) no 8+ footers

All reading and talking to breeders advise that Dumeril is the most docile of them all and we LOVE the coloring and patterning but my wofe is really loving the paterns and the irridescent scaling of the Nic's

PLEASE post your opinion and why'

    Thanks in advance

    Re: HELLPPP Choosing

    They are both excellent choices

I commend you on deciding a BRB would require more care than you wish to provide - that's a level of self-awareness and responsible behavior that many people fall short of. They sure are beautiful, but I made the same difficult choice as well because I worried that humidity would be difficult to maintain in my household.

I don't have Nics or Dums, but I have heard people rave about theirs. Dumerils are ambush predators by nature, so their feeding response can be a little different - wishing to bury themselves in substrate and strike from there. That is what I have read though and NOT personal experience.

Before you set your sights on Nics or Dumerils, I would like to recommend another small (6ft or less) boa....BCA Boa Constrictor Amarali. Size was a factor for me but I wanted a clean Suriname look and extremely docile temperament....so I got a South Brazilian Amarali. I recommend them!
Check out Barry Miller's web site for pics of the different small Amarali lines he has. My male is about 18 months old and still only about 3-4 feet. He's much smaller than my male BP and may always be.

That said, dumerils are gorgeous...I've always wanted one. Nics are quite variable in their coloring, so choose carefully if you are going for a particular adult look.

    good luck! boas are awesome

    Re: HELLPPP Choosing

Thanks for the input. on other forums have had many suggestions and some info that Dums can grow much larger than the average. Love the flower pattern on them though.
have also been pointed to Caulker Cay or Corn Islands also. Will def look into the BCA thanks I had not seen them but will def look

    Thanks!

    Re: HELLPPP Choosing

In all honesty BRB's are not that hard to keep. If you have a thermostat and put them in a tub with a large water dish then you should be good to go. They can be nippy but mine has only bit once and it was right after I took her out of the shipping box. I think the main reason they aren't a beginner snake is that new people tend to try to put their snakes in glass tanks, which don't hold humidity well, and commonly don't want to invest in a thermostat. I would still recommend a BRB since I love mine so much although you really can't go wrong with any boa.
