    New to herps

I decided I am getting a ball python. I have been reading a lot for the past few months. I would like to get another python that would also be good for a beginner... any ideas? And from what I've been reading I will need to store them in different tanks for the first month or so... Am I missing anything else?

    Thanks for your help!

Well, I'm not quite sure what you mean...

No other species of python should be housed with another species. Just generally, it's a bad idea to have more than one snake in one cage EVER.

Wait until you have your ball for a few months before getting another species. It's a good idea to get used to having a snake, then you can look into other pythons like bloods and carpets.

    Re: New to herps

    Hi,

We actually recommend keeping them in seperate enclosures their whole lives. This is especially important if they are different species as what suits one probably will not suit the other one.

But the initial quarantine thing (which is what I assume you are talking about ) should last for at least 6 weeks and longer if possible.

In the best case scenario that means in another room at least and with no equipment or anything shared between them - have a search on the boards for some more detailed quarantine info.

As to what species to keep - that's a tricky question. Have you seen any others that you really love the look of?

My #1 recommendation...don't buy a ball from a petstore! A quality breeder will save you a ton of hassle (and $$) and offer a lot more advice on proper care.

    Re: New to herps

i recomend you dont listen to a pet store when i comes to buying supplies or animals, they are more interested in sale and not the customer. I made this mistake with my first snake and later found i spent more than i should have and on the wrong items.

and never keep snakes in the same enclosure, that is asking for trouble and much stress for your snakes.
