I asked this same question. The only problem I could see is the protective layer getting seperated from the wood when wet.

If the water gets into the melamine it will expand and separate. It's good, if you make sure to seal it all up real tightly.

Don't use melamine. It is incredibly expensive for what it is. And you would still have to spend money on sealing it before you use it. I have before its no good. All i would use is 1/2 maybe 3/4 inch plywood, $12-15 a sheet. Paint it whatever color you want the base color to be. One pint will do all that you want, $5. Once it is all installed then paint the inside (go outdoors) with wood sealer, $5-10. If you do this it will save you a lot of time, money and frustration. Check this out http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/4x2.shtml he has a lot of good ideas. I just hate melamine and i think painting and sealing after is a lot cheaper and easier method.
Good luck

i guess plywood and wood sealer could be a good idea to try ! are you sure it cost less then melamine? it would cost me about 30$ worth of melamine for the size i wanted to built , but anyways thing is with plywood i'm kinda scared of splinters?

My red tail boa cage is made of melamine...I covered it with the stick on floor tiles and it is fine...though materials are cheap (free) for me as I work at a construction supply warehouse...my bp cage is made from 1/2" oak plywood and it is just as good though...
