I was always really careful outside or when I went anywhere, and if I wasn't I had people making sure I was ^_^ I'm sure he will get the hang of them pretty quickly.
Good news! There was a concern that he could have torn the ligament that holds the knee cap in place, but so far it looks like it's intact! He's also been given the green light to put as much weight on it as he can tolerate, which is good. He's now in a brace they usually put football players in, and what I see people wearing after knee surgeries. Apparently he's the smallest person that the doctor has ever fitted for one.
Right now we're looking at 4 weeks minimum. So he'll be keeping it straight for two weeks and after that he'll hopefully go to limited movement with the brace still on. He may still need some physical therapy, but all in all I'm hopeful he'll be good as new. Thank goodness kids heal so quickly.
I can't tell you all how much your support helps. I feel so much better now that we've got a definite plan on what to expect.

Awesome!! So the kneecap is broken, but no ligaments are torn? Glad to hear he is on the quick road to recovery! My ex-bf was in one of those braces for a while when he tore that ligament (whatever it's called....I forget) and although it was a pain in the butt, he got used to it really quickly.
I take it he doesn't need the crutches much now either?

I think it's the ACL ligament.
He still has to use the crutches, but he's really got it down now. The doctor was very patient showing him how to walk with them.

Ah ha! I knew what it was called but I couldn't remember
It's great that you have a doctor that is willing to help him like that. Glad to hear he doesn't have to just learn by tripping!

Re: The hazards of trick or treating...
Yay!!!! No cast! Our daughter broke her arm twice (once at 8 and again at 9) and I think the cast was more of a nightmare for me than it was for her. Happy to say she's now 24 and the arm hasn't given her any trouble.
Glad to hear the great news.

Thanks Laurie. I hope Calvin is as fortunate as your daughter.
Here's a new pic, with the new brace. (although you can hardly see it since he's wearing black pants )

Actually he really IS taking it well. Now that I'm not too paranoid to let him move, he's all over the place again. (which is making me cringe, as it looks like it should hurt more than it apparently does )
