Re: possible vanilla
I think they both look normal, and very rarely if ever can hets or possible hets look different based on what they may contain genetically. As for your breeding, if you breed a het to a normal, you are not going to prove anything out. Yy x YY= YY + YY + Yy + Yy....all normals or hets all looking the same.

Re: possible vanilla
Could always attempt to breed him to two different female BPs then raise those offspring up to have them breed with one another. That may get a decent enough genetic difference for breeding.

Re: possible vanilla
Vanilla is a co-dominant gene. In all honesty what you have there does not look like a vanilla to me, however breeding is the only way to tell.

..or just breed offspring to parent.with BP's it's ok to breed closely related individuals.

Re: possible vanilla
Well personally I wouldn't do that ~_~ You know ingrained morals
But if it's co-dom then it's probably just a normal, if it isn't recessive then if it doesn't show it's genes it probably isn't going to be anything special.

When breeding snakes, interbreeding is not a bad thing that will turn into some disfiguration over one generation. When you do it consistently for 5-6 generations is when it could get bad.
Most morphs have interbreeding background because they all started from ONE morph. They don't know any difference, and it's not the same as people so the morals really shouldn't have to be there. :]
It's just, it's going to cost you a lot of money to go out and buy new breeders every time. For example.
Albino x Normal = Het. Albinos
Het. Albino Offspring x Albino Parent = Albinos
Would you rather just have the offspring breed to the parent or go and buy another Het. when you don't have to? The snakes aren't going to be majorly affected by it, so it's not inhumane.

Re: possible vanilla
He also said it's a male. So if he can find an adult female for fairly cheap he should be able to breed the offspring off as soon as the females mature. He'd have to let them mature anyway for his adult male to breed with them, why not have the offspring do the breeding? And as a co-dom it should be fairly easy to pick promising offspring out of the clutch. ~_~ But yeah I'd rather get a bit more diversity in the genetic line than have them breeding that closely. Since it's not a female than you will have to wait for the females to reach breeding age anyway, which is most likely quite a bit of the allure of breeding son to mother, the male could very well be ready to breed the following season, and the mother is already old enough to breed.
But that's just me and I'd rather see new lines bred in.

Re: possible vanilla
Most pet stores do not sell anything but normals that are either bought wholesale from large breeders or are imported. Also hets and poss hets normally come with paper work to back up there genes from breeders. Hets are only as good as the breeders they come from too. Hets for the most part do not show what genes they hold, and hets look like normals. Only way to see is to try and prove out the snake by breeding it and to be honest I think you got ripped from a pet store who was just looking to make a sale like most are. They will tell you anything to get you to buy something from them~just like a car sales man.
