    Got mites..SO frustrated!

Ok welp..I noticed I had mites the other day. I know to treat them using PAM..I see its in a 6oz can..Im wodering if that will be enough for what i am needing to treat?...I have a 8 ft tall by 4 ft wide melemine rack. I have found mites up to half way up the rack..and in the carpet in front of the rack..I only own 10 snakes..the rest of the rack is geckos. I am pretty sure the geckos cant get the mite as I have never heard of it, and dont see any on my geckos. I was wondering if dogs, and cats could get the mites????? I have a dobie that stays in the room when i clean and feed, and a chihauhau that lives in that room in a crate. My cats often stay in there with me too. Im so frustrated lol! Any advice or tips or encouragment would be greatly appreciated!

We had mites off a feeder and totally took the snake out of his normal habitat area, bleached/ dried out for days... never put him back inside his normal habitat until they were gone- we have large set up with logs/etc.... so during his treatment we kept him on paper towels/ smaller tank for easier cleaning and observations.... we tried all the tricks as well but ended up using reptile relief and soaking/washing him... that did the trick... boy was he happy, me too.... I was told that the other animals in the house wouldnt get them as the mites want the snakes.... I have 4 cats/2 dogs....kids... no one else got them... I dont want to go through that again... and dont buy my feeders from that place anymore....

The snake mites will not bother the dogs or cats. The can of PAM will be plenty to treat the whole rack, and I would treat the whole thing. You can also use reptile relief to get rid of the adult mites you have now. The PAM will kill the new mites as the eggs hatch.

Problem with the geckos sharing the same rack as the snakes is that the PAM is also going to kill any insect that you are offering as food to your leo's.

Any way to separate them? And a can will last you a LONG time - you just lightly spray the enclosures - you don't drench them in the PAM. Most people use too much.

    Re: Got mites..SO frustrated!

Is it advised to use PAM as a preventative. Like once a month when I totally disinfect her cage - could I spray the insides of her cage with PAM and then just wipe it off as a preventative?? I've never had mites yet and sure don't want them at all.

Please advise exactly how you are to use PAM??

    Thank you.

Seriously. you dont have to do much to treat racks.

Spray into the tub with substrate for like, TWO seconds. Air it out. and youre good to go so long as things are not WET. i treated.... 20 someodd rack slots and tubs and a cage and still have plenty of Provent a Mite left for a few more applications.

I had some weird little wood mite things, they were just white, and never got bigger. Strange. But the PAM killed them and i havent seen one since.

When i change substrate, ill just Spray that too. Prevention is key!

I've been on the same can of PAM for a couple years now. It takes VERY little.

Just to clarify - we are talking about Provent-A-Mite, not PAM cooking spray.

I pre-treat enclosures of new animals, and re-treat the established colony at that time, just as a preventative measure that I don't inadvertantly carry a mite on my clothing and transfer them.

    If I don't bring in any new animals, I don't re-treat anyone.

I have had mites in the past, and hell don't want them again. Once a month when we clean the whole rack tub,I spray this stuff called equate bedding srapy lice treatment. I spray the bedding while its in the tub, let it dry (5-15mins),then snake back in. It hasnt had any bad affect, and Sean from EbN uses it too. Just dont spray on or near the snake and make sure its dry.

You can find it at wal mart.

This is a good link as to why BP.net officially endorses PAM and not product that isn't approved for use on reptiles:
