Opinion on cage size

Hey

I've been reading around for my answer. People say that a adult male python can stay in a 20Long his whole life. I got my bp from petsmart, so I'm assuming he's a he. I've had him for a year and a couple of months. he/she is 3.5 feet long and is really thick

He is growing so fast that he keeps on outgrowing his hides..which to me is that when he/she is in there..the hide is lifted off the floor..I recently just got the hides in the picture and wen he is in them...there off the floor. As u can seen there isn't much floor space.

Is it time to upgrade?????? I cannot find any hides that he can fit in that wouldn't take up the whole tank. Maybe hides that have more height then length and width???

So this brings me to my next question...if I were to upgrade i would prob go with a 3x2 cage. These cages are far from cheap. Anyone have any opinion on AP, Vision, Boaphile, RBI cages??? pros/cons on them. I've been looking at RBI's for the longest time, and I'm really close to purchasing one. Now I got doubt cause there sooo much money. I was thinkin a 30 gallon glass breeder tank but from wat eveyrone on here says. its gonna be hard to keep consistent tanks.

As you can see I am very OCD about my animals. I tend to worry about everything and I love taking other peoples opinions into consideration.

You can just upgrade the hides to something like bigger flower pot holders that have holes in them, or you can do that as well as upgrading to a 32qt-41qt tub. If you put him in a bigger display tank just make sure you give him plenty of appropriate hides so he can always retreat and feel safe. To give him more floor space, while still giving him hiding spots in the same tank you can always get 2 large flower pot holders and cut holes in the sides, then cut a piece of plexiglass the size of the bottom of them, glue it to the bottom of one and stack them. The top will be cooler than the bottom one, they will be the same, and they will only take up the space of one larger hide to give him more floor space.

i took a 2 big dog water bowls and but a hold on the sides, they love them, and i agree with the tub idea...i did...and it is working out great!!

He looks great! I think if you are able to provide the required temp gradient and his humidity is up to par, i would stick with the glass tank you have now. Otherwise throw him in a 32 qt rubbermaid tub until you decide which cage you like. As far as hides go, you can use anything as a hide. Use your imagination. I still have a box of "hides" sitting in the closet, bowls, different sized dark plastic boxes, cardboard boxes. Dollar general is a good place to find hide boxes! good luck

Cage size? Whatever makes you AND your ball python happy. Some balls don't appreciate a large cage, and will go off feed. I think MOST ball pythons are actually all right with it, as long as they have hides. A few ball pythons hate SMALL cages. lol

Good point Wolfpoison! I forgot to mention, whats the current weight on him? I have had ball pythons up to 800 grams thrive in 16qt tubs.

I usually go by the one square foot of cage space for one foot of snake length. Although our BP has verticle space as well since Humphrey likes to cruise around his little tree at night probing for an escape route - or whatever they think about in their pea-sized brains.

I have no idea on weight. i've yet to purchase a scale. Hes pretty heavy. I was looking at tubs....the only thing i don't like is the height...6 inches of head room sounds sooo low. But tubs looks sooo easy to work with and definitly a lot easier on the pocket.

Well, no one has answered your question regarding pros/cons on the cages you mentioned.

I have 6 of the RBI 3x2 cages and they are a great investment! Pleasing to the eye, holds heat and humidity really well, very easy to thoroughly clean, built very well. I would like to purchase more of these cages as I believe they are the best cage on the market. Rich (at RBI) is a super great person to deal with and is very good at quickly answering phone calls and emails. I have no cons to list on these cages.
