    Bumping the humidity up..?

ok so i've read all these different things on how during a shed your supposed to "bump" the humidity up to 70% or so. How do all of you " bump" the humidity up. I'm not sure if you guys have like automatic misters in your housing, for me i just mist with a bottle, but that doesn't seem to be very effective. Anybody have any good humidity bumping techniques?

You could place a humid hide in the tank, I just use a butter container (the round plastic ones) with moist paper towels inside (most would recommend sphagnum moss).

You could also loosely cover the top of the tank/ tub with plastic wrap along with misting.

My snakes shed fine with their humidity at about 55%. I used to bump mine up to around 70% until I started missing some of their shed signs and they still shed perfectly at their regular 55% humidity.

If you feel better raising it though, that's good too! I always use long fiber sphagnum moss. It is really nice stuff and smells soooooo good!!!! You can make your snake a little nest of it in each of the hides, or simply just put some in each of the hides. Great stuff

I put a piece of paper towel in the enclosure and spray it down once a day, if I feel that extra humidity is necessary. This has worked great for me. On the other hand, I use a rack system that keeps in humidity very well. If you need LOTS of humidity you may have to do more than this....a couple paper towels and lots of spraying, or a different substrate.

If you don't already have something covering 2/3 the top of the tank (towel, plexiglass) then do so. It helps seal in the humidity. I mist once a day with a spray bottle and it seems to work fine. Humid hides also work, as somebody mentioned but you can put a bit of sphagnum moss in there because it naturally retains moisture

    Re: Bumping the humidity up..?

Well, for my corns I don't have to do anything and they often surprise me with sheds. Even most of my BPs don't need anything done other than a light misting on the greenery... but of course there is one. My Het Albino girl has NEVER had a good shed! No matter what I do, she always has pieces stuck all over the place and takes two soakings to deal with it.

She's in shed again, so this time I went all out: She has a humid hide with spagnum moss, I mist the greenery, and I covered 60% of the holes in her tub. She'd better give me a good shed this time...I'm sick of taking her to my friend to have the shed removed from her head and nose each time.

So, there will be snakes that don't need more than the normal 50%, and there are those that need everything you can think of.

Okay, I'm getting very very frustrated with my humidity practices. I've tred spraying the tank with warm water and a humid hide. After I spray the tank, it obviously goes up, but then no kidding in like two hours or so the humidity drops to like 40% again. Any suggestions?

Are you using a glass tank? If so, there are many ways to get the humidity stable. Here is a good sticky: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=56846. Let me know if this helps.

you could put the water dish over the hot end, or if that doesn't help try a larger (wider not deeper) water dish. or if you use regular terracotta pots for hides, dip um in water for a few seconds or even mist them.
