I only use the larger mesh for the hoppers. I use a smaller mesh for the actual top of the tub. I have also been doing this for mice.
I bought some wood chews and haven't seen a single problem. I also hear its good to use wheels if you have chewy ASFs to keep them busy. I use a wheel and an igloo hide.
The only difference, is I don't use metal zip ties. I went to ACE to look for C-clips or metal zip ties and they thought I was an alien.. guess they don't exist in IL?
So I use a soldering iron and glue holes around the edge, then I take the mesh and from underneath, weave thin metal wire through the holes and the mesh. This works very well if you have enough holes and you overlap the mesh over the holes. I haven't had a single problem.

Took me a while to make it with the hopper though. Ohh man.
I know a lot of people do the weaving thing for regular rat tubs, I believe FrankyKeno has that method in her large rat tubs.

I would weave, but my hair is long and curly enough for me.

I kid, I did it for one of my tubs, but it hurts my little hands to be pulling on the wire so I stuck with the plastic zipties.
