    Work Dilema, Please Read

    Ok, here is the dilema.

    I'm a Senior Technician (Network Security) at my work.

    There has been a lot of movement with positions lately and our Level III Senior Tech got promoted to an engineering position at Corporate. Which means there is an opening.

    I am the most qualified so I applied for it. There were also a few others that applied but the managment who i am close with laughed about the canidates.

    They called me in the office tonight and asked me if I would accept it.

    Time for the dilema.

    I make $1.00 extra per hour working the night shift (3pm-12am).

    If I am to take the job I am only going to look at what is offered after the $1.00 as the actual increase.

    Note: This is a day shift position (9-5) so no shift differential.

    My manager already informed me that he would make sure Finance is aware that I have been making the extra dollar since I have been in the dept. However he doesn't know what they will offer.

    The plus is that I will be getting a review in March and another increase.

    The thing here is that if they offer me say $2.00. It's in the bag. I'll take it.

    If they offer $1.50 do I take it? And then just wait for the other increase in March?

    Also this position would get me even more Corporate exposure than I already have at this point especially dealing with Corp Legal Dept and such. It could also make me a more better candidate for when another supervisor spot opens.

    Should I just take the step up in the dept and then just hope for the best? Or staying the position I am in now risking a not so qualified person jump me in the ladder?

    I'm not sure I see the dilema at all. Either way, it is an increase in pay...just a matter of how much. But there are far more benefits than just a pay increase, as you have already pointed out. What would be the upside of staying where you are now? Is it a big enough upside to lose not only a pay raise and better working hours (although that's personal preference) and the significantly better chances at future promotions?

    Ya your right.

    Only thing holding me back is that on the night shift things are so laid back it's not even funny.

    I also feel that the level of severity of the issues that I would be dealing with are much more higher and I feel that the increase should be at least 2 dollars.

    But then again I think the larger the corporation the cheaper they are. I could make a ton of more money at a smaller company however the stability might not be there as I have here as well as the benefits.

    Plus I've been here for about 6 years.

    I just hope that it's a decent offer in which I wouldn't have to think about and just accept on the spot.

    See I know if I take it all the supervisors are going to be handing me all the grunt work that they don't wanna deal with.

    Plus check this out.

    I think when the next supervisor position opens soon I would be the next best candidate for it anyway.

    $1.50 is $3120 a year raise - that's nothing to sneeze at. In fact, that's a really nice raise.

    On the flip side, if you turn it down, you may be passed over for future promotions. Part of being promoted is taking on additional responsibilities.

    I think that is your answer right there. It really never looks good to pass on a promotion that you are qualified for. Any company likes to see a 'go getter' and it usually pays off in the end.

    I am also in IT and I can tell you it's better to take the advancement, even for no raise. The raises will come later, and the higher your position, the better they will be. Don't get stuck on the amount, and definitely don't worry that you make get worked harder. I mean, if it's just about how hard you have to work, you could go find a minimum wage job where you sit on your butt all day, but that's not why we are in it right? I've taken pay CUTS before to get a promotion, but it always pays off in the end. It puts you in that next bracket, where you are now eligible for much much more. I can't say for sure in your case, because I don't know the specifics, but in general that has been my experience.
