    Angry I admit I Freaked!

Ok.... I came home tonight excited to see my new BP Calypso( that finally arrived from Fedex after much strife) And on my way up the stairs my father said something that stopped me in my tracks. " Your room is too hot! * Both Kyros and Calypso are in my room now* you need to turn down the heat in there. If it gets too hot it will start a fire and If you don't I will shut those lights off for you!" Needless to say I flipped when he threatened to turn off their heat lamps. I freaked and said " Are you so ignorant? Its 84 degrees in there that isnt enough to cause a fire! They need that heat to survive!" Then My mom chimed in and said "well you can just get rid of the snakes." By now I was of course IRATE! Did they not think when they bought Calypso as an early birthday present that another snake means more heat in my room? They seriously think that my room is a fire hazard because it is 84 degrees. ( it was like 72 today so it feels 10 degrees hotter than usual so they automatically asume that I am cooking my own snakes! Ok I will tell you something right now. Both my snakes have a UTH and a Light. I do not have a thermostat yet so to control the UTH temps I raise and lower the cages with a series of books. ( I am getting a thermostat soon!!!) My babies are sitting pretty at 84 on the "cool" side and 93 on the hot side. OMG... I am sick of all the stupidity going around.... Its like the flu I swear!

Hate to say it but you sound like a disrespectful brat. I don't see why you need to keep your room at 84 degrees to keep proper temps for your snakes. I keep my room at 75 degrees and my ball pythons cage is 92 on the hot side and 81 on the cool side, and all I use is a UTH set up on a thermostat.

yes i keep my snake room at 80 degree ambient but with racks and the room sealed off its needed but if i had to have my snakes in my room then the ambient would not be at 80 hence why they have there own room but as a kid i kept plenty of snakes in tanks and i never kept the room at 80 (my father wouldnt allow that at all lol) and they thrived fine but this is just my 2 cents and another would be that you should be a little more respectful of your parents

I also dont believe you need to heat the room to 84, providing a hot spot is enough for the snakes.

Just have to work within your means to ensure that the tanks/tubs are receiving proper heat. It seems like a waste and too much energy to heat a whole room for 2 snakes.

Okay, I'm confused? I thought you lived with your boyfriend? At any rate if you are living with your parents and even if your not living with them. You owe them a certain amount of respect. They probably don't know what is needed to properly care for a BP. And it is their house which they have worked hard to provide for you. If they are concerned that is their right. It's their house. When you move into your own home you can do with it as you please. I also don't think you need to keep your room so hot to keep your tanks at a proper temp. Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear.

    Re: I admit I Freaked!

Keeping your ambient temp at 80 or 84 is not a fire hazard however it will definitely increase the bill.

There are other options it all depends on your needs

I have a snake / leopard geckos room and it is kept at 80-82 year round (of course I have more than just 2 snakes)

If you only have 1 or 2 snakes having the whole room heated at 84 might not be the most cost efficient way to do it.

    Here are some ideas

If you have glass tank you can switch to tubs

    You can insulate your enclosure

You can use 2 UTHs (1 on each side) and 2 Thermostats one set to provide 80-84 and the other set to provide 90-94.

Ultimately find the solutions that help you provide the proper temps for your animal and that your parents approve of.

And remember you are very fortunate to have parents allowing you to own reptiles, just communicate with them and explain what your animal needs how and how you can achieve them.

Best advice is to get yourself a cheap lamp dimmer and use that as your thermostat for now...
