    KLG + More on Sumatrans

Im considering getting a blood in the future, perhaps a year or so and I really would rather have a Sumatran. I had a few questions, most for anyone who owns a blood, and one for KLG!

KLG: Obvious question.. do you breed black sumatrans? And if you do... PICS!

    Anyone:

    1. When you buy from a breeder, are the babies usually handled quite a bit or probably not?

    2. Minimum requirements for a sumatran short tail as far as adult cage size.

    3. Generally how big/heavy do short tails get?

    4. What to know as far as considering bloods as a second snake? (I have owned my BP since December)

I know I definitely want a short tail, and I would really love the black coloring of the ones Ive seen so far. I think bloods are gorgeous and so far I think I would really like having one in the near future.

Re: KLG + More on Sumatrans

Sorry for the delayed reply...been a little down & out lately.

    A) You betcha! Here's a lovely little chrome headed baby that hatched this year...

The following are just IMHO/how I do things...

    1) My babies see me every day...I think this goes a long way in helping them calm down, to establish a routine & give them something to anticipate.

    2) My biggest (5'+) are in 48" x 24" x 15" (h) T-10 cages from Animal Plastics.

    3) Again, based on my biggest SSTP's - 5'+, and approx 20 lbs. Keep in mind these animals range from 8-10 years of age. My younger stock is a bit smaller.

    4) Whew...read through a lot of the posts on this forums & touch base with experienced keepers. Bloods are not as forgiving of husbandry mistakes as BP's & other species, but they're not rocket science to keep, either. I think the KISS approach works very well, and once you have your husbandry down pat, the rest is maintenance for the most part.

    In a nutshell!!!

Sorry for the ignorance, but what's the KISS approach?

    lol.

Kara, I hope things have gotten better with your brother.

You should read the care sheets on NERD, P.E. and VPI's website. Most babies are nippy.

Once again, bloods are not what everyone says about being agressive. Bloods have a bad rep because of WC when they were first introduced.

    Balls are meaner imho

    Good luck
