im going CRAZY!!!
my personal computer at home crashed and its in the shop till Lord knows when (got a call last night turns out it has a really crappy virus) The crummiest part is of course I havnt printed ANY photos in the last 6 months (ive taken approx 3000 in that time) of my kids, herps, house, rabbits, exc. the person working on my pc has told me i can get an external hard drive and *try* to save my photo files but chances are the viruses have attached to the photo files and may reinfect my pc once she wipes it out and redoes everything.... the worst part of all you ask...
MY WORK HAS NOT ALLOWED ME MUCH TIME TO GO TO BP.NET!
im going INSANE without internet! Im half tempted to call and cancel the i-net at home to save some money while i dont have my pc... the shop has had it a week already and im going through serious withdraws... i will have NONE of the photos of my snakes, NONE of the photos of my kids! Im soooo upset!
Thankfully I do have a pocket PC (thank you sprint! HTC Touch) but its almost as bad as a teaser... i can get full websites, emails, exc but its too much if a PITB to actually post from it!

Re: im going CRAZY!!!
Sorry to hear that. Hope you get it back soon. It would have been nice if you new someone around you that could have fixed it. It only takes me an hour or two to format and put windows and drivers back on.

While a jpg virus is possible due to a buffer overflow vulnerability in many jpg readers, it's pretty unlikely. If you have the name of the virus it would help.
If it were my PC, I'd put the drive in a usb enclosure and copy the pictures to another PC.
btw, most "techs" at stores are completely incompetent, so there's a good chance this guy has no idea what he's talking about.
You can get free antivirus software from Avast to avoid this when you get your PC back.

Oh gods.
I know this comes too late for you, but ALWAYS back up your hard drive.
Always.
External drives are not expensive and are a lifesaver.
Also, do you have your system ghosted?

Re: im going CRAZY!!!
I had a similar problem earlier this summer... I had a friend who works for IBM and knows WAY too much about computers look at it, he said unless it's warrantied so it could be replaced, it couldn't be fixed unless I dropped the cost of a new computer into it.
So, I just broke down and bought a new laptop... I can't stand NOT having a computer.
