So, this little guy pipped on August 13th. Even from the beginning, I was drawn to what appeared to be unique markings on his neck.



This was a PH pied x PH pied breeding, so I was anxious to see if it panned out.

The little one finally decides to come on out on the 16th of August with a nice full belly. He was a little small and weighed 51g.




Unfortunately he had a little open belly, so I left him alone and handled him as little as possible. I kept the paper towels in his tub very moist.

On August 19th I found this in his tub. It apears that he lost all that good yolk he had absorbed. Now he was very skinny compared to his sibs.




And his poor little belly (which already looked better than when he first hatched)



Good news is, that although smaller than his siblings, and even the newly hatched clutch, he is doing well. His belly is completely healed up after almost a month, and he ate a live fuzzy a few nights ago.

Did you put the hatchling in the tub with that hide and the yolk was still not absorbed?

yeah looks like it got caught on the hide and ripped off...

Here's my question: Why didn't you take it to a vet or something? There's no way I would have had the nerves to be able to just let it be and hope it's belly closed up. I would have been on my way to an emergency vet asap.

Too cool Jenea. I love those pics! So he's completely healed up then and eating now? He's got such a great reduced pattern and black back on him! Love it!

That is sometimes common in babies that havent absorbed their yolk yet.

It happens, sometimes they crawl out of the egg with their yolk sac not fully absorbed, as long as you keep them on damp paper towels generally it absorbs without issue and closes up just fine. Really no need to take them to a veteranarian, if anything that may have put undue stress on an already stressed hatchling.

However, I personally wouldn't have put a hide or dish in the tub at that point either, it does look like it hung up on the hide and ripped the umbilicus out.

But I'm glad to hear that its eating already, definitely a looker, good luck!

The yolk was completely absorbed, the belly was just open. You can see this in the 5th pic. That pic was taken straight out of the incubator.

Both parents have the "so called" het pied marker, so it was just a breeding to try and prove it out.

I hatch out 100+ tricolor hognose babies a year. It is quite common for a handful to have little bellies not closed all of the way. If left alone on damp paper towels, they will almost always close on their own. However, handling a lot can have negative effects.

There was no umbilicus hanging out, just an open belly. He was active and fiesty, so I was not to concerned. The reason I put the hide in was because he was SOOOOO active without one, I feared he was stressed . This happened on the 3rd day after he hatched.
